April is Magazine Month
Today, more than 400 scientists, doctors and technical experts
from 75 countries launched the Scientific Declaration
on Polio Eradication.
The declaration’s launch coincides with the 58th anniversary
of the announcement of Jonas Salk’s revolutionary polio vaccine.
The world is closer than ever to eradicating polio,
with just 223 cases in five countries last year.
To capitalize on this time-limited opportunity to end the disease,
a wide range of experts have signed the declaration
to emphasize the achievability of polio eradication
to reach the end of polio by 2018.
The scientists and experts signing the declaration include
Nobel laureates, vaccine and infectious disease experts,
public health school deans, pediatricians and other health authorities

Photos of loading container 14
which is 100% for Dili hospital full of medical supplies and equipment.
Over 2000 bath towel, 600 bed sheets, 10 hospital beds, 400 boxes,
dental chairs and equipment and over 100 walker frames and supports.
Loading was made much easier with the help of the South Perth Rotaract
members and students from the Kent Street Residential College.
West Perth Rotary Club made this container possible by sourcing
the bulk of the donations and also funding the shipping costs.
Many of the towels will be cut down to make cloth baby nappies
which are unavailable in Timor.
The dental equipment will establish a regional Dental centre in Maubisse
in the mountains inland from Dili.
Containers 13 and 14 will arrive in Timor mid April.
Container 13 is loaded with school supplies for distribution
in remote villages and schools.
Container 15 is now being loaded with more schools supplies
and also lots of bicycles kindly serviced by Dennis Menzies
and theComo Rotary Clubsupport crew.
To the kids walking 3 hours to get to school these bicycles are like gold.
Anyone interested to help with loading or support a Timor village
can call me.

The days were starting to get really frigid,
so I decided it was time for a new winter coat
. Looking through the racks at the big department store,
I was surprised they were all so expensive.
I couldn't remembered when a coat had cost so much.
I selected one and brought it to the cashier.
"Coats are really expensive this year!" I commented.
"That's right," the clerk replied.
"The manufacturing costs have gone up,
the trucking costs have gone up, everything has gone up,
even the goose feathers!"
"Goose feathers?" I asked.
"That's right," the clerk replied.
"Even down is up!"
