The Rotary Club of Karrinyup was chartered in 1974
and this week celebrated forty five years of service at a special birthday dinner
at the Hillarys Yacht Club.
Many former members and Friends of Rotary
were able to join us for this historic occasion.
During the evening there was some reminiscing on all the wonderful ways
our club has served the local, international and youth communities
through a variety of projects over the years.
As always the evening featured the presentation
of the annual Nurse of the Year
and Michael Chin Humanitarian Awards.
Many thanks to Dawn for providing the wonderful and delicious birthday cake
which was cut with great gusto by Charter member Ian McDonagh
and Pat Fosbery, widow of our founding president Graham.
Dr. Michael Chin, a long serving General Practitioner in the Karrinyup area,
was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Karrinyup
serving the Club in various roles and was the first member of our Club
to be named a Paul Harris Fellow.
He passed away in 1998.
The Michael Chin Humanitarian Award was created in 2000
to honour outstanding individuals, who serve the community
and those in need, for their humanitarian and volunteer activities.
Recipients are people whose daily dedication and caregiving epitomises
the highest standard of quality and personal commitment.
This year’s recipient is Elizabeth (Beppie) de Kuyer,
a dedicated volunteer at 'Wheelchairs for Kids',
the signature project of RC Scarborough based in Wangarra,
which has provided over 40,000 rough terrain wheelchairs
to children in need in under-resourced countries throughout the world.
Beppie started volunteering at 'Wheelchairs for Kids'
while still working as a primary school teacher
and attended after school and on weekends.
When she retired, Beppie volunteered five days a week
. Over time she has taken on each and every task that needed doing,
including overseeing the operation of supplying the
2,500 odd material covers for the wheelchairs.
The covers are produced by over 70 ladies.
She also acts as secretary to the workshop manager
, helps with the morning teas and at times visits
primary schools to promote fundraising.
When the workshops shuts down over the Christmas break,
Beppie can be seen painting and renovating the office and tea room.
Beppie is truly a well deserved recipient of the Michael Chin Humanitarian Award.
The Rotary Club of Karrinyup Nurse of the Year Award
was created in 1990 to honour outstanding nurses
working at the Osborne Park Hospital.
This annual perpetual Award recognises a nurse (or midwife)
whose daily dedication and care epitomises the highest standard
of quality and personal commitment.
Osborne Park Hospital has a number of wards catering for surgical, rehabilitation,
midwifery and aged care and there are approximately 270 nurses
and midwives working at the hospital.
Nominations for the Award may be made by nurses, patients,
doctors and hospital management staff.
This Award, which is displayed proudly on the wall at Osborne Park Hospital,
is highly regarded by the staff and promoted extensively by the Hospital.
The 2019 Winner of the Nurse of the Year Award is Karen McNulty.
Her nomination tells us that Karen
did her initial training at Edith Cowan University
and spent her first two years working at Royal Perth Hospital followed
by a few years as an agency nurse before
coming to Osborne Park Hospital
, where she is a Clinical Nurse whose role is to lead
a team of nurses providing high quality, holistic nursing care
for a ward for patients over 65 requiring stroke and general rehabilitation care.
She provides bedside care, education and support to patients,
staff and visitors within the ward and across the rehabilitation
and care areas for the Hospital.
Karen understands and contributes to teamwork maintaining
constructive, therapeutic and supportive relationships
with her colleagues consistently.
Her colleagues acknowledge her as a natural born leader
stating that she goes the extra mile and really tries to engage
the patients and their families to get them back on the path to independence.
Karen embodies the traditional view of a nurse –
with traditional values, but at the same time focuses on patient care
with the 21st century elements of critical thinking,
based on current research and the best of contemporary practice.
Her nomination states that,
Karen is the nurse I would wish for my loved ones to have look after them.’

Well done for another near record breaking year!
The 2019 Rotary Club of Rockingham’s grant night was a great success
and the club was able to donate $40,000 to nineteen worthy local organisations.
We received 43 applications totaling more than $250,000
and so it was a difficult task for the Community Committee
to select the successful applicants.
Thank you to everyone who came for the evening,
we had a great night and it was enjoyed by all.
It is through the generosity of the local community
who come to the Rockingham Rotary Mart on a Sunday
that our club is able fund such worthy local organisations.
The club asked the recipients to spend it in our region
and to remember that shop local,
buy local is the Rockingham way.

This year once again I'm taking the challenge and participating
in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout.
On one of the coldest nights, 27th June,
I'll be sleeping out in the cold for 1 night along with
many other WA CEOs and business leaders.
I'm hoping to shed a light on homelessness and to break the cycle.
Every night, 116,000 Australians sleep 'rough' and experience homelessness

. Of those around 9,000 West Australians are having
to experience this on a daily basis.
What's even worse is a growing number of children under 12
are experiencing homelessness.
This Sleepout will be the 3rd year I'll be participating in

I've managed to raise over $6,000 for this amazing cause.
This year in 2019 I'm looking to raise over $5,000 for the homeless

, where she visited the Rotary Club of Holsworthy

Trish told fellow Karrinyup members of her wonderful experiences
of visiting the UK in the spring
and in particular of her visits to other Rotary clubs.
Guest Speaker – Ashleigh Mills
Ashleigh spent 10 days in Cambodia volunteering
with Hair Aid, in February,
it operates in Cambodia, Philippines, Thailand & Indonesia.
Teaching people living in poverty how to cut hair.
Many of the families Ashleigh visited lived in
Cemeteries & rubbish tips, in very impoverished conditions.
Teaching Cambodians these skills means they
will be able to earn money to better their lives;
their health, housing, education & clothing.

Local identity Harry Neesham was a recent Guest Speaker
at the Attadale Rotary Club.
Harry is a Certified Practicing Accountant
and currently a Director of the Clontarf Foundation
for mentoring aboriginal boys into education.
He has also had a significant involvement in sport, particularly football
where he played and coached East Fremantle
after being part of the 1965 premiership team.
He is also a world champion 70+ Water Polo player,
having achieved a gold medal in Budapest in 2017.
