The Great Gatsby was written 100 years ago

Mary Poppins, the magical British nanny, was travelling home,
 but due to worsening weather,
she decided to stop at a hotel for the night.
She approached the receptionist and asked for a room.

"Certainly, madam," he replied courteously.

"Is the restaurant open still?" inquired Mary.

"Sorry, no," came the reply,
"but room service is available all night.
Would you care to select something from this menu?"

Mary smiled and took the menu and perused it.
"Hmm, I would like cauliflower cheese please.

And may I have breakfast in bed?" asked Mary politely.

The receptionist nodded and smiled.

"In that case, I would love a couple of poached eggs, please,
" Mary mused.

After confirming the order,
Mary signed in and went up to her room.
The night passed uneventfully and next morning
Mary came down early to check out.
The same guy was still on the desk.
"Morning, madam. Sleep well?"

"Yes, thank you," Mary replied.

"Food to your liking?"

"Well, I have to say the cauliflower cheese was exceptional,
 I don't think I have had better.
Shame about the eggs though.
They really weren't that nice at all,"
 replied Mary truthfully.

"Oh, well, perhaps you could contribute these thoughts
to our Guest Comments Book.
We are always looking to improve our service
 and would value your opinion,"
said the receptionist.

"Okay, I will, thanks!" replied Mary,
who then checked out, paused awhile,
then scribbled a comment into the book.
Waving, she left to continue her journey
Curious, the receptionist picked up the book
to see the comment Mary had written:
"Super cauliflower cheese, but eggs were quite atrocious!"

Why You Should Worry
about a Case of Polio in Somalia
Low vaccination rates in multiple African countries
 could doom global eradication efforts
submit to reddit

From Afghanistan to Somalia, the struggle to eradicate polio continues to lurch along in fits and starts. The past few days have brought a modicum of good news and some potentially quite bad news.
On May 13, the Taliban issued a statement declaring that it would no longer target polio vaccine workers and is ordering its fighters to help in vaccination campaigns. The group had previously marked vaccine workers for death because of fears that they might be acting as spies for Western countries—fears that were further inflamed by a successful US effort to assassinate Osama bin Laden that included a sham hepatitis vaccine campaign by the CIA.
Just two days earlier, however, the World Health Organization reported that “wild-type” poliovirus was isolated in Somaliafrom a 32-month-old girl who suddenly became paralyzed, as well as from three other individuals with whom she was in contact. Genetic testing has since indicated that the virus in question is linked to polioviruses circulating in northern Nigeria, according to Nature’s newsblog.  The setback marks the first new case of naturally occurring polio in Somalia since March 2007. Emergency vaccination initiatives—and fund-raising to pay for them—are now underway.
As the accompanying map shows, this development is a concern not just for Somalia, but for a broad swath of Africa, where low vaccination rates leave children particularly vulnerable to infection with polio, most likely from Nigeria (particularly northern Nigeria), where the virus is still endemic. In our increasingly interconnected world, an uncontrolled outbreak in these countries could fuel polio’s return around the globe--which would be particularly tragic considering that there had been only 26 cases of polio (before the Somalia news) reported worldwide so far in 2013, compared with 53 at this point last year

fun with Animals

For decades it had been just a small village at a ford across a small river.
As the area became more closely settled a dam was built upstream.
Unnoticed by the dam builders,
a vein of valuable gemstones was amongst
the material used to create the wall.
It didn’t take some of the locals long to find this source of wealth
and a gemstone marketplace was set up in the now-dry riverbed.
It was a challenge to dig the stones out of the dam,
but it provided a good living.
A new and  inexperienced gemstone hunter
wanted to gather all the stones at once and sell them
in one huge batch at the riverbed market.
However wiser heads prevailed after they told him,
“You don’t want to dig out all the stones at one time.
 You’ll flood the market.”

The Rotary Fellowships Program . . .
Rotary Fellowships are not fixed in time .
some are removed for not being effective and some new ones appear.
There are currently 62 Fellowships with “Rotarian Jazz Fellowship”
becoming official last September, and in January
“The International Fellowship of Rotarian Photographers”. (IFRP)
(Could have had a shorter name!).
IFRP is not just for skilled photographers,
but is for any Rotarian interested in photography at any level.
Probably we all fit that category.
There are many Fellowships ,
and they are detailed on www.rotary.org/fellowships,
including contact advice and advice on how to join.
Most Fellowships have a booth at the International Convention
, and have special events, including tours,
 in association with the Convention,
 and at other times.
Some of the Fellowships that could be of interest  are:
 Amateur Radio; Caravanning; Computer Users; Cricket; Cycling; Fine Arts & Antiques;
 Fishing; Golf; Internet; Jazz; Lawyers; Motorcycling; Music;
Photographers; Recreational Vehicles; Rotary on Stamps;
Scouting; Scuba Diving; Singles; Skiing; Tennis; Travel & Hosting;
Wellness & Fitness; Wine; and Yachting.
Fellowships bring together Rotarians, spouses and Rotaractors
 who share a common interest,
helping them to make new friends and explore opportunities to serve.
All Fellowships have members in at least 3 countries.
Through our Fellowship activities,
we could all have close friends in many countries.
One of our great pleasures is meeting with them at the Convention
and at other times.
All Rotarians would benefit from membership of one or more Fellowships
. Why don’t you give it a try

This is a new one that needs support
First 100 applicants get free membership
Published on May 5, 2013
Welcome all Rotarians, Rotaractors, spouses, and friends of Rotary,
all over the world, to join us and share our passion.
Around the world we can find wonders,
but underwater wonders are so unique, as water covers about
70% of our beloved MOTHER EARTH.
We are a group of Rotarians who are really interested in scuba diving
and sub-aquatic sports as means to discover and explore marine life.
This group will hopefully provide us with the opportunity of exploring together
the underwater wonders all over the world.
Our aim is to enhance fellowship and friendship
 amongst Rotarians and non-Rotarians.
Both scuba diving and Rotary, are not limited by sex, age, color, religion or race..
.....IT'S ALL ABOUT YOUR HUMANITY......
.and the ability to indulge into your fellow human being,
and thus be able to serve beyond yourself.
We plan to have diversified activities that enhance fellowship and friendship.
We would like to volunteer to clean sea beds and watch for,
and conserve marine life.
We seek to organize marine life awareness seminars,
group gatherings, and offer scuba diving courses.
So keep your gear ready and your rotary pin too........:)
Have fun!

Further Australian support for polio eradication
Joint media release

·         The Hon Julia Gillard MP, Prime Minister
·         Senator the Hon Bob Carr, Minister for Foreign Affairs
28 May 2013
Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Foreign Minister Bob Carr
today announced further funding to help eradicate polio –
a debilitating disease that continues to strike the world's most vulnerable people,
 especially children.
Australia will provide $80 million over four years from 2015 to 2018
to help finish the job and achieve worldwide polio eradication.
This contribution follows a $50 million commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative
from 2011 to 2014 announced by the Prime Minister
at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth in October 2011.
The Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister applauded the leadership
shown by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization,
UNICEF and Rotary International on polio.
The Gates Foundation is contributing US$1.8 billion
for the Polio Endgame Strategic Plan 2013 – 2018,
which is one-third of the total budget.
Australia has a proud history of support for polio eradication.
From 1912 to 1972, more than 30,000 cases of paralytic poliomyelitis
were reported in Australia,
and a number of polio survivors in Australia today still live
with the pain and debilitation of post-polio syndrome.
It was Australia's Sir Clem Renouf
who, as President of Rotary International in 1978 and 1979,
led the international campaign to vaccinate every child against polio.
As a result of these early efforts by Rotary,
the global community came together in 1988 to launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
Since 1988, there has been a reduction in the number of polio cases by 99.9 per cent.
Following the certification of India as polio-free in 2012,
polio remains endemic in only Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
The world now has polio eradication within its reach
. This would be the second disease to be eradicated globally
after small pox and a major victory for international aid and public health.
The new contribution brings Australia's total commitment to polio eradication
 to over $130 million.
Our aim is to help eradicate polio and strengthen routine immunisation.

Now with an additional $15692 raised for other local charities (12 in all)!!
- so we've officially passed last years total of $105K!

Number of clubs taking part -
186 clubs in 36 countries worldwide at 95 separate events
(compared with 118 in 23 countries at 64 events)

Number of swimmers 6103 -
compared with last years record of 4546 in 1 hr.

Through your extraordinary collective efforts,
together we have established Rotary Global Swimarathon
as the biggest mass participation simultaneous annual fundraiser in Rotary history
- you are amazing!!!

Most importantly in these first 2 years the total is just over $200,000
for End Polio
Now and $216,000 overall, enough to protect up to 1 million children
worldwide from the devastating disease of Polio.

Now it's time to announce our special awards.
As you know, we previously announced 3 main award challenges.

The first for the event that raised the most money for End Polio Now.

Delighted to officially confirm that by raising Aus $9858.60 or US $9721 ,
Rotary Club of Kwinana District 9465, supported by Rotary Clubs of Rockingham,
Canning Bridge, Willeton, and Booragoon are our deserving winners -
many congratultations on a very innovative online fundraising campaign
that provides a great model for other clubs to follow!

Next we have the prize for the event that had the most swimmers taking part -
that honour goes to Rotary Club Green City Jaysingpur in District 3170
who recorded a fantastic 350 swimmers
with local schools and colleges taking part.

Finally there was the overall District Prize.

Based on the number of clubs taking part there were 5 finalists

1. District 2980 India 5 points
2. District 9320 South Africa 4 points
3. District 9550 Australia 3 points
4. District 2450 Egypt 2 points
5. District 3170 India 1 point

We then judged them based on 3 additional criteria

1. Number of events staged
2. Number of Swimmers who took part
3. Amount raised

These were the results in the 3 categories

1. Number of events staged

1. 9320 = 5 points
2. 9550 = 4 points
3. 3170 = 3 points
4. 2980 = 2 points
5. 2450 = 1 points

2. Number of swimmers

1. 3170 = 5 points
2. 9320 = 4 points
3. 9550 = 3 points
4. 2980 = 2 points
5. 2450 = 1 point

3. Amount Raised

1. 9550 = 5 points
2. 9320 = 4 points
3. 3170 = 3 points
4. 2450 = 2 points
5. 2980 = 1 point

Final totals:

1. District 9320 - 17 points
2. District 9550 - 15 points
3. District 3170 - 12 points
4. District 2980 - 10 points
5. District 2450 - 6 points

So the overall Best District participation award winner is District 9320 -
 congratulations to everyone involved!!

However, so worthy of recognition were the contributions
of the other 4 finalists we would like to make 4 additional awards

1. District 9550 Australia - for the most money raised by 1 district
2. District 3170 India - For the most swimmers in 1 district
3. District 2980 India - For the most clubs taking part in 1 district
4. District 2450 Egypt for the most clubs taking part in 1 single event

We also felt it was important to recognize the outstanding contribution
of so many new clubs to the event.
so we have added a Best Newcomer award.

Deserving special mentions are the Rotary Club of Hamilton D9600 Australia,
Rotary Club of Waynesboro D7360 USA
Rotary Club of Los Olivos District 5240
, and Rotary Club of Cabarrus County 7680
who each featured in either the worldwide
top 10 for funds raised or for most swimmers

However the overall winner, with 240 swimmers
taking part and raising well over US $5000 was judged
to be Rotary Club of Murwillumbah in District 9640 -
not bad for a first year!

Finally, we felt it was very important to recognize the outstanding efforts
 of individual fundraisers.
This years award for the most amount raised by 1 swimmer goes to Kero O Shea,
of the Rotary Club of Canning Bridge District 9465
who raised over $2000 in sponsorship at the Kwinana event

So there you have it -
9 awards in total and all fully deserving of the recognition.
Rotary Club of Grantham President Irvin Metcalf
and myself will be in Lisbon for the Rotary International Convention.
On Tuesday 25th June I'm proud to be representing
Rotary Global Swimarathon at the Advanced social media workshop
at 2.30pm local time http://www.rotary.org/en/Members/Events/Announcements/Pages/13may23_annc_conv_sm.aspx -that would be a great opportunity for participants in 2012/13
 Global Swimarathons to meet up.

For the award winners,
please let us know if you or other representatives
of your district will be in Lisbon
and we will get in touch to make arrangements
for presenting the awards if we possibly can.

Finally, delighted to announce that for 2014
event planned for Sunday 23rd February 2014
we will be partnering ( I am actually leading the social media campaign for )
We plan to make these fantastic silk Flower pin badges
available to raise funds at every event worldwide in 2013/14
and you can find out more details in Lisbon in the Hall of Friendship

So hope to see as many of you as possible in Lisbon -
will be wonderful to meet up in person after all this time working together!

Enjoy your weekends and get ready for further announcements
around August time for the 2014 event!

Thanks and Very Best Wishes

What in the world is Rotary

-------------------------

District 9465 has expressed an interest in partnering
with Hope for Children Australia (HFC)
to develop a restaurant training facility for at-risk young people
 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia..

Our District 9465 in Western Australia
would like you to partner us in a project to help the youths in Ethiopia
to be trained in hospitality so that they could find useful employment.
According to UNICEF, 43% of Ethiopians today are under the age of 14
and youth unemployment stands at about 54%.
The Friends Café aims to break the cycle of poverty f
or at-risk young people in Addis Ababa
by providing accredited hospitality
and tourism training in a professional, working restaurant setting,
together with employment support for those young people
to enter Ethiopia’s growing tourism industry.

The target group of trainees will be 14 to 25-year-old impoverished youth,
with preference given to those already engaged
with Hope for Children (HFC) through the sponsorship,
school or other community programs
in Addis Ababa and Babile.

In supporting at-risk youth to become economically self-reliant,
the FRIENDS Café Project also hopes to reduce the risks
 of illegal migration human trafficking,
now identified by the Ethiopian Government,
the ILO and the IOM as an increasing problem,
particularly for Ethiopian girls and young women
in search of work in Arab countries.
It is envisaged that within a two year period
this restaurant will become self funding with the intention
of channelling the profits towards vocational training.
HFC plans to train at least 150 young people
over the first 3 years of operation.
Once we are well established as a training facility
and a self-sufficient enterprise,
we hope to be able to extend opportunities
to many more young Ethiopians who are struggling
to access training that translates to real employment.

The District has agreed to quarantine $20,000.00
under the Global grant to help in establishing
a Vocational Training Centre to train the youths of Ethiopia
in hospitality so that they can gain useful employment
not only in Ethiopia but overseas
 like the middle Eastern countries.

The total cost of the project is $200,000.00
 over a three year period.

We would like Districts and Clubs in Australia
and also International partners to join us
by contributing funds to the project.
Please contact undersigned for further details.

"the power of one"

Patrick was spotted driving along the highway at a steady speed,
when he suddenly indicated right and pulled off onto the shoulder.
He quickly jumped out of the car and opened the trunk.
From a large bag, he produced a party hat, streamers,
a bottle of lemonade, several sandwiches and a cake.

After eating the food and drinking the lemonade,
he launched into a little Irish jig.
The whole proceedings lasted about fifteen minutes,
after which he got back in his car and drove off.
       Curious, the police officer,
who'd watched from a distance, followed him.
 Half an hour later,
they saw him stop and repeat the whole procedure.
This was too much for the officers,
so they decided to check him out.
"Can we ask you the reason for all the stops
and the food, drink and Irish jigs?"
one of the officers asked.
       "Well, sir," explained Patrick,
"I'm on the company outing."
"But you're the only one here,"
 argued the officer.
       "Yes, I know," replied Patrick.
"I'm self-employed!"

A husband and wife were at a party chatting with some friends when the

subject of marriage counseling came up.
"Oh, we'll never need that. My wife and I have a great relationship,"
the husband explained. "She was a communications major in college and I
majored in theatre arts." He continued, "She communicates well and I act
like I'm listening."

R otary Fellowships are autonomous, international groups of Rotarians,
Rotarian spouses, and Rotaractors who join together to:
  • Share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.)
  • Further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession
  • Make new friends around the world
  • Explore new opportunities for service
  • Have fun and enhance their Rotary experience
Learn more about Rotary Fellowships.
How to get involved?
Consider joining a Rotary Fellowship that addresses your interest.
To get started
  • View complete list of Rotary Fellowships.
  • Consult the Rotary Fellowship Directory to get in touch with group(s) you're interested in.
  • View a list of Suggested Rotary Fellowships and offer to help organize a prospective fellowship.
How to organize a new Rotary Fellowship?
Forming a new Rotary Fellowship takes a lot of work,
but as Rotarians who have established a group will attest,
 the effort is worthwhile.
Before submitting a proposal, plan to develop a strong network
of prospective members in at least three countries.
You can start by posting your idea on the list of Suggested Rotary Fellowships.
While Rotary Fellowships operate independently of Rotary International,
they must receive official recognition from RI’s Board of Directors
and operate in accordance with Rotary policy.
If you are interested in organizing a prospective Rotary Fellowship
, please contact RI staff for guidance.

Brillant Ballet

A woman was having a medical problem with her husband's snoring.
She called the doctor one morning and asked him
if there was anything he could do to relieve her "suffering."
"Well, there is one operation

I can perform that will cure your husband,
but it is really rather expensive.
It will cost $1,000 down, and payments of $450 for 24 months,
 plus payments for extras."

"My goodness!" the woman exclaimed.

"It sounds like leasing a new sports car!"

"Humm," the doctor murmured,

 "too obvious, huh?"

Once upon a time, long, long ago
there were two unique lions in the jungles of Africa.
Both, it seems, had human-like qualities that made them claim territory,
daring the other to cross over the line.
 Strange as it seems,
the boundary between their turf was a well-traveled trail through the jungle.
 All day every day,
both lions lay in the brush staring across the trail at their compatriot
daring him to cross into their territory.
The local natives knew of this animal feud,
but all this was unbeknown to African Jack
, a well-known and must publicized guide who did not speak Lionese
and was unfamiliar with the territory.
While he was leading a safari through the jungle,
walking all day and cutting vines with their machetes,
all this constant hacking brush had them worn to a frazzle.
After seeing two or three of his safari drop from exhaustion,
African Jack decided to stop on the trail between these two lions
and camp for the night.
After sitting up camp, eating, and getting his safari settled African Jack
sat on a stump and began reading.
While he was busily engaged in the printed page,
the two lions, simultaneously, pounced on African Jack and ate him on the spot.
When the 6 o'clock news heard of the tragedy,
they reported, "African Jack killed this evening.
The motive is unclear,
but it is reported he was reading between the lions."

It is a little known fact that before he became a famous movie star
Yul Brynner had a job in a bank.
He was responsible for processing loan applications,
and had a very strict boss.
One unbreakable rule was that when Yul had an application ready for approval,
he was to give it to an office boy to walk it down the hall to the Loan Processing Department -
he was never to do this himself,
but was to stay in his own office at all times.
One day a very important man came in to set up a loan.
 This man was very impatient,
and when Brynner could not find an office boy
to take the paperwork to the loan department,
the man insisted that Yul do it himself to save precious time.
Brynner let himself be bullied into it,
with some misgivings.
As bad luck would have it,
on his way down the hall he passed an open window,
and a sudden breeze tore the papers out of his hand into the street below!
He panicked when he realized he would have to tell his boss that the papers were lost!
Very fearful of being fired,
 he confessed to his deed,
 but he was not fired.
Instead his boss gave him an ultimatum.
He said, "I will let this infraction go this one time.
But in the future,
Yul, never walk a loan!"

ENJOY YOUR SPEED

A famous art collector is walking through the city
when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer
in the doorway of a store and he does a double take.
He recognizes that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable,
so he walks casually into the store
and offers to buy the cat for two dollars.

The store owner replies
"I'm sorry, but the cat isn't for sale.

The collector says,
"Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice.
I'll pay you twenty dollars for that cat."

And the owner says
"Sold," and hands over the cat.

The collector continues,
"Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder
if you could throw in that old saucer.
The cat's used to it and it'll save me from having to get a dish."

And the owner says,
"Sorry buddy, but that's my lucky saucer.
So far this week I've sold sixty-eight cats."

Lending a Hand

--------------

Twenty-five years after we set out to achieve
one of the most ambitious public health goals ever,
we are within reach of the finish line: polio eradication.
As a medical student in the late 1950's,
I remember caring for children paralyzed by polio,
including those forced to live in "iron lungs"
because polio had paralyzed the nerves required to breath.
Virtually everyone knew someone whose family had been affected by the disease.
Fortunately, development of vaccines by American scientists
 Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin
enabled us to rid the U.S. of polio by 1979.
In 1988, when polio still occurred in 125 countries
and paralyzed 350,000 people annually,
health ministers from around the world
passed a resolution at the World Health Assembly (WHA)
 calling for eradication.
Since then, the U.S. has been working with partners to free everyone,
everywhere, from polio forever
, and I am proud to have been a part of the effort from the beginning.
The resolution created a remarkable public-private partnership --
the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) --
led by the World Health Organization,
Rotary International,
the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
, and UNICEF.
 Its impact has been extraordinary.
Today, all but three countries have interrupted wild poliovirus transmission,
and in 2012 we recorded just 223 cases -- fewer than ever before.
 We'd always thought India would be the last country to eliminate polio;
today, it's been polio-free for more than two years.
The U.S. has played a major role in this fight, with CDC at the helm.
CDC has established an unprecedented global network of laboratories,
provided technical experts and more than 1,800 volunteers to polio-affected countries,
and contributed three-quarters of the US' $2.1 billion investment in polio eradication.
Director Dr. Thomas Frieden activated CDC's Emergency Operations Center
to strengthen the agency's eradication efforts.
CDC is joined in this work by the US Agency for International Development
 and by other US-based organizations,
including Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Both have contributed more than $1 billion and, in Rotary's case, countless volunteer hours.
The changing situation as we near eradication forces us to revise our strategies.
For example, the program will introduce an inactivated injectable vaccine
to eliminate the rare cases of paralysis caused by the existing oral vaccine.
In addition, operational barriers like weak infrastructure,
vaccine refusals and insecurity are obstacles to reaching kids in the final pockets.
In response, the GPEI recently developed the
Building on years of progress and lessons learned,
the plan tackles polio on several fronts: it seeks to eliminate both wild
and vaccine-derived poliovirus,
while strengthening routine immunization to protect against other diseases.
The plan will require $5.5 billion through 2018,
three-quarters of which have already been pledged.
At the end of May, on the 25th anniversary of the GPEI's founding,
 the WHA endorsed the plan.
I had the privilege of joining nearly 500 other scientists and technical experts
in endorsing it in April.
We are closer than ever to ending polio.
Insufficient human and financial resources now could compromise our chance of success -
and the longer it takes, the more expensive it will be.
The U.S. must continue its leadership and commit additional funding to achieve the goal.
Twenty-six years ago, colleagues and I published an article
that concluded: "global eradication of poliomyelitis is inevitable;
the only question is whether we will accomplish it
or pass on the needed action to our successors.
We believe we should act now to leave the legacy of a poliomyelitis-free world for our children."
That statement is just as true today.
We must act now.

lyrics
The hills were alive with wildflowers
And I was as wild, even wilder than they
For at least I could run, they just died in the sun
And I refused to just wither in place
Just a wild mountain rose, needing freedom to grow
So I ran fearing not where I'd go
When a flower grows wild, it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

And the flowers I knew in the fields where I grew
Were content to be lost in the crowd
They were common and close, I had no room for growth
I wanted so much to branch out

I uprooted myself from home ground and left
Took my dreams and I took to the road
When a flower grows wild, it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

I grew up fast and wild and I never felt right
In a garden so different from me
I just never belonged, I just longed to be gone
So the garden, one day, set me free

Hitched a ride with the wind and since he was my friend
I just let him decide where we'd go
When a flower grows wild, it can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

Not many people know it, but the Devil actually wears a wig.
You'd never know if you weren't told. It’s a perfect fit.

Anyway, down in the world of fire and brimstone,
one guy did find out and he decided to have a little practical joke
. So one night, he sneaks past the guardian demons
and manages to get all the way into Satan's bed chamber,
whereupon he steals the hair-piece and makes good his escape.

Well, of course, the Devil was most displeased by this
and he rounds up his demons and demands
to know which of them had been so lazy as to let someone sneak past them.
Naturally, none of them owns up, which makes him even madder:
So he calls a general meeting of everyone the under-world:
everyone has to attend.

The meeting is held in a huge cavern and it's absolutely packed
(except for the odd gap in the crowd,
where there's a lava-pit or bottomless fissure in the floor)
. As Satan steps up to speak,
everyone sees that he's got no hair,
and peals of laughter start echoing out around the hall.
The devil bel-lows at them to be quiet,
and a deadly hush falls.

“Whoever stole it,” he shouts,
 “had better return it immediately!”
And here he paused for effect,
”Or else there'll be Hell Toupee!

The Stick

The cowboys gathered in their bunk¬house after a hard day on the range
. One of them popped open a cold beer

and sat on the edge of his bunk.
"Where's Tex?" he asked.

"Oh, he's out looking over his new car," another responded.
"It's that new foreign car he just bought.
He just can't get enough of it.
Spend hours just looking and touching it."

The cowboy standing in the corner said:
"Ole Tex is a smart aleck.
As soon as he gets back here hell start bragging about that car."

The one with the beer then said
: "Not Tex. He's just a good old boy arid that's all hell ever be.
When he comes in, all he's going to do is say hello."

"I know Tex better than any of you," said another cowboy
who was standing in the darkness of the far corner.
"He may be a good old boy but he's also a smart old boy.
He'll figure out some way to brag about his car
even when he's just saying hello."

Just then the bunkhouse door swung open
 and Tex sauntered in.
He looked at all the others who seemed startled at his arrival and shouted:
"Audi, partners!"

strict committee chairs and district executive secretaries;
club presidents, secretaries, executive secretaries, treasurers,
 foundation chairs, and membership chairs
June 2013

Dear Rotary Leader,

I am pleased to announce the final launch of Rotary Club Central!
In this phase we have developed several key features
that will further help you plan throughout the Rotary year.
While the 2012-13 year is coming to a close,
club and district leaders can update goals in Rotary Club Central
for one year after your term ends.
The new features in Rotary Club Central include:

·         A Global View that shows a summary of the goals
 and achievements of clubs worldwide.
·         Age & Gender Trends are now available in the Your Club tab.
These trends can help your club work on specific membership initiatives.
·         Import service projects from Rotary Showcase
and Rotary Grants to help your club plan for the year.
This feature will save you time and prevent duplicate records.
·         New reports will help you utilize the information stored in Rotary Club Central.
·         Performance improvements have been made to speed up the site’s loading time.

Visit the Learning Center in the coming months to download reference
guides to help you use this new resource.

I also encourage you to watch the Rotary Club Central: What’s in it for you
webinar which took place on 12 June.
We were joined by Rotarian panelists who shared their experiences
with Rotary Club Central and talked about why it is important
for clubs to track their goals and progress.
At this time, the webinar is only available in English.
We will schedule additional webinars based on interest.
If you would like to see this webinar in your language,
 please let us know.

I’m also happy to announce that new enhancements
have been added to Rotary Showcase.
These improvements will make it easier for your club
to share its successful projects with the Rotary world.

Please contact your CDS representative or the Contact Center
with any questions about these online resources.

Earlier on this year our club had the privilege of listening to Richard Keeler
speak at one of our Rotary Meetings.

Richard is the author of a book called The “Going the Extra Mile”
which features the stories of thee West Australian Companies
on our Southern Coast, an Art Gallery, an Organic Food Grower
and a Winery, who have built up successful businesses
on the concept  of making every engagement between their business and their customer,
a satisfying, loyalty generating experience.

Going the Extra Mile is suitable for a wide readership
including school leavers embarking upon careers involving customer liaison.
Every small and medium business owner should also read this book
and as an added bonus the book is designed
so that it would great on a coffee table or reception area.

After Richard’s presentation the Rotary Club of Victoria Park
committed itself to help promote this book for Richard
and to that end we have arranged a dinner function in conjunction
with The Local Chambers and WA Business News to do that.
This is a great event for Rotarians who have businesses to attend.

The Function is to be held on Wednesday Evening 24thJuly
at the Old Cathay Restaurant ,

An Australian Bushland farmer decided one day that he would sell his cattle
as a cash protection against a predicted drought.
He called a cattle buyer who examined the bovines and set a price.

Deciding it was far too low,
the farmer decided he might do better by offering
them for auction at the district fair.

There, the cows broke loose and trampled down a gate leading to a tent
where the district band was playing "Waltzing Matilda."
They milled around the uniformed musicians
 and fortunately hurt no one.

The crowd from the cattle auction followed the animals
into the tent and cheered them on.
When the auction resumed later,
the cattle had gained so much attention
they sold for twice as much as the original offer.

This surely proves that a herd in the band is worth two in the bush.

With the weather sunny and warm,
a driver was cruising down the interstate highway
when a huge truck crashed into the side of his car,
severing his arm at the shoulder.
Two teenagers, observing the accident,
volunteered to rush the severed arm to the local hospital
for considered restructuring to the driver's shoulder
. Several hours later, with the driver at the hospital
and no sign of the young teenagers or the man's arm,
the police put out an APB for the teenage drivers saying,
"This is the worse case of arm robbery in police history."

The new Rotary year:
 Changes you should know about
By Arnold R. Grahl

Rotary News -- 1 July 2013

For three years, 100 districts have been testing Future Vision,
a pilot of The Rotary Foundation’s new grant system,
which was designed to increase Rotary’s effectiveness
during the next century of service.
As the new Rotary year dawns, the future has begun.
All districts begin using the simplified grant structure 1 July.
Districts have already been completing the qualification process and qualifying their clubs.
A number of clubs and districts have begun preparing
and submitting grant applications.
There will be three types of grants: global, district, and packaged.
You can learn about all three types,
and get more details about the application process,
Also on 1 July, new leaders will take office at the club, district,
 and international levels.
Ron D. Burton, of the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA,
will become Rotary’s 103rd president
and will encourage Rotarians to Engage Rotary, Change Lives .
from The Rotarian and download his convention speech.
Anne L. Matthews, a member of the Rotary Club of Columbia East, South Carolina, USA,
will become the first woman to serve as vice president.
Matthews, a former director of South Carolina’s Department of Education,
is president of Matthews and Associates,
an educational consulting firm.
 Read her biography.
Dong Kurn Lee, of the Rotary Club of Seoul Hangang, Korea,
will take over as Rotary Foundation trustee chair.

Other changes for 2013-14:
  • Rotarians will be allowed to form satellite clubs,
  • whose members meet at a different time
  • and location from their parent clubs.
  •  The change, approved by the Council on Legislation in April,
  •  is intended to make it easier for members to develop the core for a new club.
  • Districts will be able to form an unlimited number of e-clubs.
  • The Council removed a limit of two e-clubs per district.
  •  The change is designed to bring in new members
  • and appeal to young professionals,
  • who may be less able to meet in person weekly.
  • The name of Rotary’s fifth Avenue of Service will change from
  •  “New Generations Service” to “Youth Service.”
  • This change was also approved by the Council. In 2010,
  •  this avenue of service joined Club Service, Vocational Service,
  •  Community Service, and International Service.
  • The dues Rotary clubs pay Rotary International will increase
  • US$1 to $53 per member.
  • A redesigned Rotary website will be launched in late summer.
The RI Board of Directors will seat nine new directors 1 July,
along with 2013-14 President-elect Gary C.K. Huang, of the Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan.
The new directors for 2013-14 are
 Celia Elena Cruz de Giay, of the Rotary Club of Arrecifes, Buenos Aires, Argentina;
 Mary Beth Growney Selene, of the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton, Wisconsin, USA; Seiji Kita, of the Rotary Club of Urawa East, Saitama, Japan;
Holger Knaack, of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany;
Larry A. Lunsford, of the Rotary Club of Kansas City-Plaza, Missouri, USA;
P.T. Prabhakar, of the Rotary Club of Madras Central, Tamil Nadu, India;
 Sangkoo Yun, of the Rotary Club of Sae Hanyang, Seoul, Korea;
 Steven A. Snyder, of the Rotary Club of Auburn, California, USA;
and Michael F. Webb, of the Rotary Club of Mendip, Somerset, England.
will seat new members
Monty J. Audenart, of the Rotary Club of Red Deer East, Alberta, Canada;
Noel A. Bajat, of the Rotary Club of Abbeville, Louisiana, USA;
and Kalyan Banerjee, of the Rotary Club of Vapi, Maharashtra, India.
John Kenny, of the Rotary Club of Grangemouth, Scotland,
 will serve as chair-elect,
and Michael K. McGovern, of the Rotary Club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth, Maine, USA,
 as vice-chair.

I’m not a pilot but this video looks real to me.
However, a number of people within the aviation community
feel that this landing may be faked.
Some of the reasons given are that there
are no visible navigation nor landing lights,
the crosswind component appears to change significantly
between the two final segments shown in this video,
and braking appears to be too sudden.
I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

A woman walked into a vet’s waiting room.
She’s dragging a wet rabbit on a leash.
The rabbit does not want to be there.
“Sit, Fluffy,” she says.
Fluffy glares at her, and sopping wet,
jumps up on another customer’s lap
, getting water all over him.
“I said sit, now there’s a good Fluffy,” says the woman,
slightly embarrassed. Fluffy,
wet already, squats in the middle of the room and urinates.
The woman, mortally embarrassed, shouts,
“Damn it, Fluffy, will you be good?!”
Fluffy then starts a fight with a Doberman
and pursues it out of the office.

As the woman leaves to go after it,
she turns to the rest of the flabbergasted customers and says,
“I’m sorry, I’ve just washed my hare,
and can’t do a thing with it!”

A Dubliner boards a bus and asks the driver how long the trip is between Limerick and Cork.

“It’s about 2 hours,” says the driver.

“Thanks,” says the Dubliner.
“Well then how long is the trip between Cork and Limerick?”

The driver is now a little angry, and says
 “It’s still about 2 hours.
Why do you think there would be a difference?”

“Well,” says the Dubliner ,
“It’s only a week between Christmas and New Year
, but it’s an awful lot longer than that between New Year and Christmas!”

 Nan McCreadie
to serve as first woman president of RIBI
By Arnold R. Grahl

Rotary News -- 5 July 2013

In yet another sign of Rotary’s growing diversity,
an organization formed in the 1910s,
is poised to inaugurate its first woman president.
Nan McCreadie, a member since 1997
of the Rotary Club of Feltham, Greater London, England,
will be inaugurated on 6 July at an event in Twickenham Stoop Stadium.
McCreadie has served as vice president of RIBI
, chair of its Constitution Committee, president’s representative,
 and district governor.
She is a Bequest Society member.
“I am tremendously honored to be appointed RIBI’s first female president,
which I firmly believe is a reflection of how Rotary is moving with the times,” she says.
“We are currently undergoing a new stage in our development
with more and more women and younger people wanting to join Rotary
 and help their local communities.
So it is a really exciting time for me to be taking over
and I am very much looking forward to my year in office.”

Anne Matthews begins term
as first woman vice president
By Arnold R. Grahl

Rotary News -- 2 July 2013

As Rotary clubs continue to promote diversity in their membership,
 Rotary is marking a milestone.
Anne L. Matthews, a Rotarian from South Carolina, USA,
began her term on 1 July as the first female vice president of Rotary International.
“Women have contributed significantly to Rotary initiatives,
and will continue to do so,” says Matthews,
who is also the first woman to serve as both
a Rotary Foundation trustee and an RI director.
“No doubt, the unfortunate and sometimes misleading image of ‘an old boys’ club’
 will be buried for good.
“Whether the job is done by a male or female is immaterial,” she adds.
“What is important is that the individual who serves is effective in that role.
With that said, I am extremely proud to be the first woman vice president
and am thankful for the California pioneers
who pursued membership of women in Rotary.”
A member of the Rotary Club of Columbia East,
Matthews has served Rotary in numerous capacities.
In addition to her service as trustee and director,
she has been a regional Rotary Foundation coordinator,
RI president’s representative, lead seminar trainer for the International Assembly,
Future Vision Committee member, RI training leader,
and district governor.
She is a recipient of Rotary’s Service Above Self Award
and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service
 and Distinguished Service Award.
Matthews is a Rotary Foundation Benefactor,
Bequest Society member, Major Donor,
and Paul Harris Society member.

Gail Lazzaro, senior scientist with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service in Perth,
was the guest speaker at the Inner Wheel District A40’s
 recent Lunch and Learn day.

Inner Wheel is an International Women’s service organization
originally formed by the wives of Manchester Rotarians in 1924.
The first Australian Inner Wheel Club was formed in 1931
and the association quickly spread across the country.

Ms Lazzaro spoke of the use of Cord Blood
found in the umbilical cord and placenta after childbirth.
   Cord Blood contains stem cells,
which can be used to treat hematopoietic and genetic disorders.

For the last few years Inner Wheel Australia’s national project,
has been to sponsor research into the use of this umbilical cord blood.
 This has been highly successful
and to date we have provided the funds for 33 Research Grants.

Following a request in 1999 from Rotary WA
for a worthwhile project to be their centennial gift to this State,
Inner Wheel came up with a recommendation to create a Cord Blood Bank
 and this was subsequently chosen.
Ms Lazzaro said that this newly formed Cord Blood Bank programme
will give healthy mothers giving birth to healthy babies
the chance to donate cord blood.

“The Rotary WA Cord Blood Bank which we hope will open shortly,
will be the fourth public cord blood facility in Australia,” she said.

“The WA programme will help fill the gaps in the national cord blood registry
by focusing on the unique ethnic mixes in our community.

“Donations stored in the new cord blood bank
will allow cord blood to be used for any matched patient.
It will be a world class facility,
capable of storing cord blood for decades.”

Going the Extra Mile, written by Richard Keeler,
is suitable for a wide readership, including school leavers
embarking upon careers involving customer liaison.
Every small and medium business owner should also read this book,
and as an added bonus it is designed
so that it would look great on a coffee table or reception area.
This publication features the stories of three West Australian Companies
on our Southern Coast (an Art Gallery, an Organic Food Grower, and a Winery)
who have built up successful businesses on the concept
of making every engagement between their business
and their customer, a satisfying, loyalty-generating experience.

Our club can confidently recommend this book
as we recently had the privilege of listening to Richard Keeler
speak at one of our Rotary Meetings and several of our members
have bought and read the book.

After Richard’s presentation, the Rotary Club of Victoria Park
committed itself to help promote this book for Richard
and to that end we have arranged a dinner function
in conjunction with The Local Chambers
and WA Business News to do that.
Any Rotarian committed to running a successful business
would benefit by attending this function!

Join us  on Wednesday Evening 24thJuly at the Old Cathay Restaurant ,

59 Albany Hwy (Monodelphous Building).

A distraught man went to a psychiatrist and exclaimed,
“Doctor, I believe that I am possessed by an evil spirit.”
After talking to the patient at some length, the psychiatrist said,
“You do appear to have a problem.
I’d like to see you again next Wednesday.”
After a second session of psychotherapy,
the psychiatrist pronounced his patient completely cured.
For the next nine months,
the psychiatrist sent the man a monthly statement for his professional services,
 but the man wouldn’t pay
and refused to acknowledge the debt.
Finally, the psychiatrist took the man to court
 and had him repossessed

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Jeff Raikes, CEO of the BIll & Melinda Gates Foundation
announces a new fundraising agreement between
Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
An announcement at the Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Portugal,
set the stage for a bold new chapter in the partnership
between Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
in the campaign for polio eradication.
“Going forward, the Gates Foundation will match two-to-one,
up to US$35 million per year, every dollar Rotary commits
to reduce the funding shortfall for polio eradication through 2018,” said Jeff Raikes, the foundation’s chief executive officer,
in a prerecorded video address shown during the convention’s
plenary session on 25 June.
“If fully realized, the value of this new partnership with Rotary
 is more than $500 million.
In this way, your contributions to polio will work twice as hard.”
The joint effort, called End Polio Now – Make History Today,
comes during a critical phase for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative .
The estimated cost of the initiative’s
Funding commitments , announced at the Global Vaccine Summit in April,
 total $4 billion.
Unless the $1.5 billion funding gap is met,
immunization levels in polio-affected countries will decrease
. And if polio is allowed to rebound, within a decade,
more than 200,000 children worldwide could be paralyzed every year.

A magician accidentally turned his wife
into a couch and his two kids into armchairs.
He started to panic and thought to himself,
"What the heck have I done?"
 He began to ponder,
"How am I going to bring back my beloved family?"
So, he thought for a while and decided a good idea
was to take them to a hospital and see if the surgeon
could operate and bring them back.
He loads them into his van and off he rushes
 to the local hospital.
He walked up and down the hospital
and after some serious surgery, he asks the doctor,
 "Doc, how are they doing?"
The doctor replies,
"Comfortable, sir!

An Englishman, a Frenchman, a Spaniard and a German
are walking down the street together.
A juggler is performing on the street but there are so many people
that the four men can’t see the juggler.
So the juggler goes on top of a platform and asks:
“Can you see me now?”
The four men answer:
 “Yes.” “Oui.” “Si.” “Ja.”

A funny Bachelor Party Bungee Jump prank
at a Norwegian bachelor party where the bachelor

from his mates he works up the courage and makes the jump.

Aicatraz Prison, often known as the "Rock,"
is on a small island in San Francisco Bay.
Alcatraz has long been the most famous prison in America.
It started as a military prison during the Civil War
and became a federal prison in the early part of the twentieth century.
When it closed in the 1960s,
it had housed such famous con men as the Birdman of Alcatraz and Al Capone.
Within the world of federal penitentiaries,
Alcatraz attracted a lot of prospective guards to tend the prisoners.
Sometimes two and three generations of the same family
had members working as guards at the "Rock."

In one local San Francisco family,
working at Alcatraz spanned three generations,
 but unfortunately, not a fourth.
One young man was not destined it seemed to follow
in his father's, grandfather's, and great-grandfather's footsteps.
As is common with the new generation,
this young man preferred a more professional calling,
and he graduated from law school, became a district attorney,
and finally built a successful private practice.
He was asked several times to become an officer at Alcatraz,
and he was even asked to consider becoming the warden.
Yet his private practice consumed too much of his time.

After several government inquiries,
he always demurred, always refusing the honor of heading the prison.
Finally, in 1963, he decided to retire from law
having built a secure nest egg,
and he himself asked if the warden's job was still available.
Unfortunately, the Justice Department had decided to close Alcatraz,
and when the federal officials told him that no there
would be no job at Alcatraz for him, he could only reply,
"I coulda been a con tender.

Every body should watch this video

A fly was buzzing along one morning
when he saw a lawn mower someone had left out in their front yard.
He flew over and sat on the handle,
watching the children going down the sidewalk on their way to school.
One little boy tripped on a crack and fell,
spilling his lunch on the sidewalk.
He picked himself up, put his lunch back in the bag and went on.
But he missed a piece of bologna.
The fly had not eaten that morning and he sure was hungry.
So he flew down and started eating the bologna.
In fact he ate so much that he could not fly,
so he waddled across the sidewalk,
across the lawn, up the wheel of the lawn mower,
up the handle, and sat there resting and watching the children.
There was still some bologna laying there on the sidewalk.
He was really stuffed, but that baloney sure did look good.
Finally temptation got the best of him
and he jumped off the handle of the lawn mower to fly over to the baloney
. But alas he was too full to fly and he went splat!!,
 killing him instantly.
 The moral of the story:
Don't fly off the handle when you are full of baloney.

Hi Everyone,

I’m writing to ask you to sponsor me.
The sponsorship can be for any amount from $1
up and will help fund the elimination of polio.

I’m swimming in the Rotary Club of Kwinana’s Swimarathon on 23 February.
The Swimarathon is part of a global Rotary initiative
to raise funds for the eradication of polio
. Participating swimmers are required to swim 100 metres
and I will do so at the Kwinana Recquatic Centre
next Saturday between 5p-6pm as a member of the Kwinana Seals team.

Any small amount you can spare will help save a kid from the misery of polio.
You can donate as little as one dollar ($1)..

A dollar will fund about 7 vaccinations.
That would have been more than enough to protect the kids in the picture below.

Thank you for reading my request.
Here’s the link to the donation site: http://www.mycause.com.au/page/56184

All the best

A man was brought in to the hospital intensive care ward,
put in a bed, tubes coming out everywhere.
A week later, another man was admitted,
in a similar condition.
 Both lay there,
 machines pinging, tubes poking, etc...

A couple more weeks went by before one of them

had the strength to raise his hand and point to himself and say,

The other signaled he had heard, raised his own hand, and said,
 "Irish."

This act tired them out so badly it was a week before

the first summoned up the strength to say,

 "Glasgow."

Again, the second replied in a weak frail voice,
"Dublin."
Once more, the strain was too much for them both and they passed out.

Days passed before the first man managed

to again point to himself and say

, "Jimmy."

Replied the other,

A few hours later,

Jimmy managed to point to himself again and rasp out weakly,

 "Cancer."

 Paddy responded,

ON A LIGHTER NOTE!!

Rolling Safari

Many historians are unaware of a little-known aspect of American history
involving George Washington.
The Father of our Country became an almost apocryphal figure,
and people know a lot of the stories and myths surrounding George Washington.
We remember the story of his supposedly throwing a silver dollar across the Potomac River.
We remember other stories about young George's penchant for always telling the truth.
But few people or even historians know the story of another incident
in George's youth that helped cement his reputation for honesty;

George's father was more than a planter in Colonial Virginia.
He was also a collector of colonial artifacts
. He was famous for his collection of wooden Indians.
In fact, his collection was famous in the Colonies.
Young George, intent on sharpening his skills with the hatchet,
went into the large room where his father kept his collection
of valuable, hand-carved Indian figures and proceeded to chop them to pieces.

When George's father saw the damage that George had hewn with his axe,
he confronted him.

"George," he asked, "are you responsible for this?"

"I cannot tell a lie, father," he answered.
"I cut down your Cherokees."

it was just a simple job!!!

Bus Stop

In the late 1800s, not wanting to be outdone by American rodeo, an
English fellow decided to become a rodeo star. Not having a horse, or
any cattle, he cast about for some way to perform. His vocation was
building outhouses, and he had several samples behind his house. He
had also installed a couple of standing gas lamps in his yard.

As a start, he decided that lassoing these objects would be good
practice. After all, he reasoned, they may not be moving targets, but
at least he could get the hang of the rope.

Now he needed a mount. Not having a horse, he thought a bicycle would
be a good substitute, and so he grabbed a coil of rope, hopped on his
bicycle and off he went. He was phenomenally successful, and quickly
got the hang of it.

Each day a friend of his would stop by to watch and give
encouragement. Upon showing up one day, after the Englishman had been
practicing for a couple of weeks, the friend noticed that the
Englishman had taken to riding with no hands, and whirling two lassos

In 2012, the effort to end polio made historic progress.
The year ended with the fewest wild polio cases,
in the fewest places ever in history.
Fewer than 250 cases were reported
compared to 350,000 cases in 1985
when Rotary first started this mission.
The polio vaccine is reaching children in some
of the most remote regions on earth
. Nearly 430 million children were vaccinated against polio last year.

Mothers

A little boy wants his toy, so he walks up to his mother and says
 "Mom, give me my toy."
 His mother responds by saying,
"What are the magic words?"
So the little boy says the magic words
and his mom gives him his toy.

The next day, the little boy starts kindergarten.
At snack time, the little boy wants some juice,
so he walks up to his teacher and asks for a juice box.
The teacher says
"What are the magic words?"
So the little boy says the magic words.
 But the teacher gets upset,
and calls the little boy's mother and asks her to come in.

When the three of them are sitting in the room together,
 the teacher asks the mother;
"Have you been teaching your son sarcasm?"

"No," the mother says, "Why, what did he do?"

"Well, he asked for a juicebox," said the teacher,

"and I asked him to say the magic words,
and instead of saying please, he said
'you're thin and you're beautiful.'"

WHO SAID PAPER WAS DEAD!!!!!

The patient went to his doctor because he had the flu,
and the doctor wrote out a prescription for him in his usual illegible writing.
The patient put it in his pocket,
but never went to get the tablets from the pharmacy.
 Every morning, for two years,
he showed it to the conductor as a railroad pass
. Twice it got him into the movies,
once into the sports stadium, and once into the symphony
. He got a raise at work by showing it as a note from his boss.
 One day he mislaid it.
His daughter picked it up, played it on the piano
and won a scholarship to the conservatory of music.

My friend Bo wrote that they found about 200 dead crows near Topeka,
and there was concern that they may have died from avian flu.
They had a bird pathologist examine the remains of all the crows,
and he confirmed the problem was definitely NOT avian flu,
 to everyone's relief.
However, he determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks,
and only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.
The State then hired an ornithological behaviorist to determine
the disproportionate percentages for truck- versus car-kill.
The ornithological behaviorist determined the cause in short order.
 When crows eat road kill,
they always set-up a look-out crow in a nearby tree
 to warn of impending danger.
His conclusion was that all the lookout crows could say "Cah,"
 but none could say "Truck."

NEED FOR DRUG AND ALCOHOL EDUCATION

It has become very evident over the past 24 months
from Survey Information conducted by Mission Australia
and McCusker Foundation along with the WA Government Reports
from the Education and Health Standing Committee that Drug and Alcohol Education
is desperately needed for our youth.

Who is Demanding Life Education’s Programs?

Both Government and Private Primary Schools from Meekatharra in the North
to Collie in the South and schools in-between
continually book the Life Education Program
to assist them with their Health and Welfare programs.

Who is Funding the Programs?

A number of Rotary Clubs along with Corporate Partners,
Private Donors and Parents (STILL NO GOVERNMENT FUNDING)
continue to support this great need by our community.

How can you HELP?

Join other Rotary Clubs in funding the various operating costs
(student books, towing of the mobile class rooms, ongoing maintenance etc)
or sponsor a school in your area.

WANNEROO ROTARY CLUB
The Hillarys and Wanneroo clubs had a combined fund raising event
courtesy of the BIA at the Boat Show
held at the Hillarys Marina over the 3 days 15th to the 17th March.
This was to raise funds for the Dreamfit Foundation
that modify buggy’s, motorbikes, boats, hovercraft etc
to enable disabled people access and drive vehicles
that to now are impossible for them.

We used the area around our Dolphin Wishing Well
and Dreamfit had a large proportion of their vehicles
and equipment on display for the general public.
This was the first time we held this event and raised $3,383.00 for Dreamfit
to assist with the great work that they do.

The Clown on stilts paid us a visit and kept us entertained for awhile.
Visit the Dreamfit Foundation Wesite to see what they have to offer the disabled people.

Magic Clerk

A Pat of butter (named Steve)
has lived a long, satisfying life.
He's very content with it,
and he realizes that he should end his life here,
on a happy note. However, before he does so,
he wants to cross a few things off of his
 "butter list".

First, Steve finds a nearby piece of toast,
and hops onto it.
He spreads himself out,
and relaxes there for a little while.
It's fun,
but he still doesn't feel completely fulfilled with his life.

Next, Steve searches for a second starchy food to hang out on.
 He picks a bagel,
and stays even longer than he did on the toast.
The feeling of being split into a circle revs his engine,

Finally, Steve finds a third food and spreads on it.
He stays a very long time,
and another piece of butter comes over to see what's going on.
 Joe tells him,
"I wanted to experience some new things before I die.
But now that I've done all of them,
I think it's a good time to go.
Nice knowing you!"

He is about to pass away when the other butter stops him.
 "Wait, Steve!" he cries.
 "Don't stop now; you're on a roll!"

Laurel and Hardy

Jane and John were childhood sweethearts who grew up
and married in regular multi-gender partnership.
Time passed and they had a beautiful baby girl.
There was only one problem.
They couldn’t decided on a name for their newborn baby girl.
They’d narrowed it down: John liked Cohen,
and Jane liked Carmen,
but they couldn’t break the deadlock.
Being so in love Jane and John decided not to argue
but to give the little girl both names,
and people could call her whichever they liked best.
John called her Cohen
 and Jane called her Carmen.
By the time she was 18,
the poor girl didn’t know if she was Carmen or Cohen.

More from the Clubs

Rotary Club of Mosman Park

In 2011 our Club was invited to join a group recently formed
by the Hillarys Rotary Club which is involved in educational and health programs in East Timor.
The group then consisted of Rotary Clubs of Hillarys, Applecross,
Jersey (UK) and the Hillarys Soroptimist Club.

In the past twelve months, with your help with funding, we have:
 built a toilet block at the Hatolia Primary School
 built a dormitory for the secondary school in Hatolia

We are currently involved in a primary teacher training program
at Baboe Leten in the Atsabe District which has 10 teachers and 270 children.
The primary teacher training program is a proven program
that has been ongoing for the past 4 or 5 years at schools in the Ermera District.
Later in the year we are planning a similar program in
another Primary School in the Atsabe District.
We are being assisted in this program by the Friends of Ermera,
a volunteer group in Casey, Victoria
who have all the necessary local contacts
and knowledge of the education policies and personnel in East Timor.
The Bentley/Curtin Rotary Club is coordinating the collection and loading into containers
of WA Education Department surplus equipment for shipping to Dili
for distribution to schools in the Ermera and Atsabe Districts
 through their contacts in Dili.
 We are currently endeavouring
to source a sponsor to cover the cost of freight from Fremantle.

Rotary Club of Karrinyup

In President Bob's absence, PE Peter Durrany
 welcomed Ann Mitchell this evening,
who spoke eloquently about the magnificent Kimberley Dental Team

Kimberley Dental Team (KDT) – toothpaste drive

The Kimberley Dental Team is a joint project of the
Rotary clubs of Perth Heirisson and Kununurra
to provide desperately needed dental treatment
to remote indigenous communities in the Kimberley.
An important component is preventive treatment and oral hygiene.
If the team can provide toothpaste to all families who are seen in the program
it will be a big step in reducing the incidence of dental disease.
KDT can source freebie toothpaste in small sample tubes from the dental trade,
but feel that normal size tubes are more appropriate to the family situation
and are better for dispensing by the 180 teachers involved in the school program.
(42 schools approximately 4,000 children)
To this end a toothpaste drive involving D9455 clubs is planned.
This involves a toothpaste collection at a designated club meeting
where members bring in tube(s) of toothpaste
which the club boxes for collection or drop off.
Requirements are: –
·      Full-size tubes only.
·      Avoid desensitising toothpaste
 (e.g. Sensodyne) – offensive taste.

Collection (3 options)
·      Drop-off at Owen Homoeopathics
443 Great Eastern Highway Redcliff (near Airport)
·      Drop-off at District Conference
·      Drop-off at City Toyota (Wayne Smith)
63 Adelaide Terrace Perth.
·      Contact Wayne Smith for collection0417917589
·      Give them to your AG their next visit to your club

This is recommended as a small, easy to run Club project
with no time limitation. KDT visits the Kimberley twice a year
(April and August) at which toothpaste is distributed.

100 Metre Dash

Do you know who this is??
answer below

As we all know, April 1st is that day we traditionally
play practical jokes on each other.

In this particular town it is the custom for such jokes to end at Noon.

Last April 1st, John and Big Hoss (two rookie policemen)
were patrolling the downtown business area.
They decided to stop into the local coffee shop for a coffee and a donut.

 The time was 11:55 AM.

Three minutes later, they got a call on their police radio,

"33 in process, man in bank dressed as a banana."

Well there was only 1 bank in town;
in fact, it was just across from the coffee shop.
And a 33 was an "armed robbery",
but it was also just 11:58 AM.
John and Big Hoss decided it was the dispatcher

playing a joke on them.

They continued enjoying their coffee break.

At 12:01 PM, they got a second call on their radio,
 "Repeat, Urgent, 33 in process,

man in bank dressed as a banana."

Realizing it was past noon,
 they rushed across the street,
but arrived 30 seconds after the banana split.
