Now here is a great idea
I received this information and video
from a Rotarian Friend in D 4815 Argentina

 FESTIVAL OF CHALLENGED MUSICIANS

Annual event organized by Rotary La Cañada (District 4815)
 since 2001.
Purpose: To give musicians with disabilities the opportunity to show their work,
and to share the stage with other well known artists.
The proceeds go to the Scholarship Fund for
the study of dance and music of people with disabilities.
The 13th edition took place on October 2 and 3
 in Córdoba, Argentina.
The  project originates  when we realized that these musicians
did not have a space to exhibit?
Show?  their work  and the community was unaware of their existence and efforts.
so we thought it was possible to offer  artists
with special needs a chance to integrate
into the community through their art.

This Festival has been organized annually since 2001
and all editions attracted considerable participation
of previously selected disabled artists from around the country
who joined special guest artists and established artists in our society.
There have been artists from other countries,
 Brazil and Colombia.

The success was reflected in the massive crowd that filled Libertador
Theatre facilities, in the widespread media coverage
(print, radio and television) of the festival,
in the important projection that several of the artists had
and the good proceeds that constitute a fund for scholarships
 especially for  disabled artists.
Previous editions of our festival, since 2001,
have been successively declared of Cultural, Legislative
and  Provincial Interest by the Superior Government
of the Province of Córdoba .

For more information about this important program,
 you can write to rotarylacanada@hotmail.com.

Rio Cuarto Villa Concepción, Río Tercero, Villa Maria, Villa Maria East,

Rotary International resolution E-2-K of the Board gave effect
to Article 15 010 of the IRR that authorised the changes in the district boundaries
and, as of July 1 2008, the clubs of District 4810 at the time,
and Rotary clubs in the area of Córdoba province
which had been located within the boundaries of District 4870

Something to think about

The driver of a huge tractor trailer lost control of his rig,
he plowed into an empty tollbooth and smashed it to pieces.
He climbed down from his truck and looked at the wreckage,
not quite sure what to do.
Within a matter of minutes, another truck pulled up
and unloaded a crew of workers.
The men picked up each broken piece of the former tollbooth
and spread some kind of creamy substance on it.
Then they began fitting the pieces together.
In less than a half hour,
they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed
and good as new.
"Astonishing!" the truck driver said to the crew chief.
"What was that white stuff you used to get all of the pieces together?"
The crew chief said,
"Oh, that was tollgate booth paste."

Polio eradication in Egypt with the
D 2451

Successful Rotary Contributions to Keep Polio Out of Egypt

Dr. Ahmes Ghabriel, Rotary’s National PolioPlus Chair for Egypt,
asked the District 2451 Disaster Relief Team
to help out with the coordination of participation for Rotary Clubs of Egypt.
The team was so enthusiastic to work to keep Egypt free of Polio.
Understanding the threats, the team prepared
and printed Polio awareness fliers, posters
and banners for different clubs who showed interest in participation.

On the National Immunization day campaign (November 17-20, 2013)
, Rotarians from different clubs were assigned different health units
were vaccination of children was taking place.
Rotarians posted Rotary banners with a message to inform people of the Campaign
and distributed fliers containing awareness on the Poliomyelitis virus
and the importance of immunizing children under 5 years of age.
The fliers also showed the world-wide role of Rotary
in eradicating Polio as a strategic partner with CDC, WHO and UNICEF
Rotarians helped with the vaccination of children,
 encouraging the vaccination team.
Some Rotarians offered meals to the nursing team
who were vaccinating children and some brought them light snacks
 and/or water bottles.
Rotarians also brought candy and sweets to offer to children
 after taking the polio vaccine.
The presence of Rotarians was much appreciated by medical zone directors
 and health units supervisors

Police stop my car

There are two French Legionnaires in the desert,
and they’ve been separated from their unit and are lost.
They’ve been wandering for several days without food and water,
and are nearly resigned to the fact that they will soon die from dehydration,
when as they reach the top of a sand dune,
they see a big, bustling market laid out before them.
Naturally, they can’t believe their eyes and think it’s a mirage,
but as they draw closer, they can hear the stallholders’ cries,
and they eventually reach the market and realise that it’s really there.
So the legionnaires rush up to the first stall they can and cry to the stallholder
, “Stallholder, we have been travelling in the desert for many days,
and have had no food or water.
We shall surely die soon unless you have some you can sell us.
Tell us, do you have any sustenance for us?”
The stallholder shook his head and replied,
“I’m sorry, French legionnaire type people,
but all I have to sell is a load of bowls full of jelly, topped with custard
and cream, and lovingly sprinkled with hundreds
and thousands of pieces of fruit and cake.”
The legionnaires look at each other, mildly surprised,
and move on to the next stall, where they ask the stallholder,
“Mr purveyor of fine foodstuffs and the like,
we have been travelling through the desert for days,
deprived of the necessary beverages and foodstuffs
 which are required for survival.
We shall surely die soon, unless you can sell us some skins of water.”
The stallholder looked at them embaressed, and confessed
“Gentlemen, tragic as I admit it is,
I have none of the ingredients necessary to life for which you ask me.
All I have to sell is this large bowl of jelly topped with custard
and cream and sprinkled with hundreds
and thousands of pieces of fruit and cake,
with a little cocktail cherry in the middle at the top, there,”
he said, pointing out the glace cherry
. “I cannot help you.”
The legionnaires look at each other in desperation,
and run on to the next stall, where they demand of the stallholder,
“Look, mate, we need water or we’ll die.
We’ve been travelling without water for days and need some now.
Do you have any you can sell us?”
The stallholder looked at his curl-ended shoes in shame as he confessed,
“Sorry, fellas, all I have to sell you is a bowl of jelly, with custard, cream
and hundreds and thousands of pieces of fruit and cake.
 I can’t help you.
I’ll have to condemn you to a long and lingering death through dehydration.”
The legionnaires were really worried by this point,
and they went through the market, stall by stall, asking each stallholder
whether they had any water they could sell them,
and thus save their lives, but each stallholder gave the same reply,
all they had to sell was a bowl of jelly with cream, custard
and hundreds and thousands of pieces of fruit and cake.
Dejected and resigned to their grim fate,
the legionnaires left the desert market and walked off into the setting sun.
As they did so, one turned to the other and said,
“That was really odd, a big market in the middle of nowhere,
and all they sold was bowls of jelly with custard, cream
and hundreds and thousands of pieces of fruit and cake.”
The other turned to face his companion and replied,
“Yes, it was a trifle bazaar

Two archeologists, exploring a remote mountain in Tibet,
came across a huge granite statue
 which resembled a sitting man.
It stood almost 400 foot tall,
and its bodily details were accurate down
 to the fingernails and teeth.
“It looks real enough to talk,” says one.
“Lets try,” says the other.
Turning to the statue, he asks it its name.

No answer.

"How old are you?"
No answer.
Finally, one shouts out,

“What is the square root of 64?”

Suddenly, the mountain shakes as the giant statue rises

onto its feet and puts it's hand on its chin.

Then after about ten seconds,

the statue answers in a roaring voice,
 “EIGHT!”

Of course," says the first scientist,

 "It only stands to reason."

Rotary Club of Rossmoyne

In 1996, routine polio immunizations in Nigeria
and other African countries were anything but routine
. Competing health priorities and lack of funding hampered many governments
from putting polio eradication high on their agenda.
The drive for a polio-free Africa needed a playmaker.

Enter Nelson Mandela.
Herb Brown, Rotary's president in 1995-96,
recalls seeking the South African leader's support.
"President Mandela was so gracious and listened
as we described the problem," Brown says.
"I told him only he had the influence to persuade
the countries to resume immunization."
Mandela agreed to help.
"I'm well aware of Rotary and all the work you've done,
and all the work you did while I was in jail," he told Brown.
At a press conference, with Brown at his side,
Mandela asked all the heads of state in Africa to open
their doors to polio National Immunization Days.
Mandela helped launch the Kick Polio Out of Africa campaign
later that year with 1996-97 Rotary President Luis Giay
and Rotary Foundation Chair Rajendra Saboo.
Almost immediately, Africa's polio eradication effort was back on track.
Using soccer matches and celebrity endorsements,
the campaign raised public awareness of polio
and helped spur more than 30 African countries
to hold their first National Immunization Days.
In recognition of his vital work,
Rotary presented the Rotary Award for World Understanding to Mandela in 1997,
then Rotary's highest honor.
"We chose President Mandela because of his significant contributions to world peace,
human rights, and freedom," said Giay,
adding that Rotary members especially appreciated
"his strong support of the eradication of polio throughout Africa."
Mandela called the award "a tribute to the people of South Africa's rainbow nation."
Rotary's work toward eradicating polio
"has shown the power of a global network of people
who are ready to roll up their sleeves and put their heart
and soul into saving children from disability."
Mandela donated the award's $100,000 prize to the
Nelson Mandela Children's Fund.
Following his death,
Rotary members in South Africa lauded Mandela as
"one of the 20th century's iconic symbols of freedom and equality,"
 "the father of the nation,"
and "a leader of service."
"Mandela was a man who overcame unimaginable hardships
to emerge as one of the greatest leaders of our time
— and one of our greatest humanitarians . .
. . [His] legacy of courage, determination, and commitment
will forever inspire us to move forward in our effort to achieve a better,
 more peaceful world,"

Please make Rotary a winner of Airmiles http://10millioncharitymiles.com/
Last year we won over 2.5 million miles.
How they were used is explained
in the letter below.
Rotarian Action Group for Peace -
 Communications CommitteeTop Contributor

All miles earned in this program benefit humanitarian programs
and are never used by senior leaders
or to offset regular business travel expenditures.
I personally oversee this program and only two RI Staff members
including myself have access to the account.
Each year a staff committee representing the areas of focus
is given the responsibility to manage the use of these miles
to maximize their impact and enhance the image of Rotary.
Uses during this last year include free airline tickets
for youth exchange students whose family could not afford them
which had previously blocked their participation in the program.
A peace theme postcard contest furnished free tickets for high school students
and one parent to attend President Sakuji's peace conferences.
Numerous teams of doctors and surgical nurses were transported
to perform life saving heart surgeries while teaching techniques to local doctors.
Numerous children and their parents were transported for lifesaving treatments.
Teams of journalists were provided with tickets to report on NIDs.
Rotary volunteers were sent to perform NIDs.
Tickets were also issued to support water projects
and activities in support of the areas of focus.
Several web stories were written during the year
to report on the program
and should still be available on the RI website.

Dear Fellow Rotarians

A body of International Rotarians have set up an event,

Even our Interacts and Rotaracts will be motivated for this
and I am very sure that our Youth here will perform wonders.

Please take part in this very simple event leading up to our Birthday.

The purpose of this is to set up "
The World's Greatest Meal to Help Polio"
. during the week commencing 23rd February
which is Rotary Week
we are asking Rotarians, friends of Rotarians their neighbors,
work colleagues in fact anyone to hold a meal
and at the same time raise funds for End Polio Now.
23rd Feb is the Birthday for Rotary.

It may be a frugal meal with the spend going to the cause,
it could be a Club meal where donations could be made
in fact just a meal where people meet and raise money
or give money for End Polio Now.

At the end of the day we want everyone across the world
who take part to have fun and enjoy themselves
and at the same time help children not get polio.

Remember that for every Rupee or any equivalent currency the
@ Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will "TRIPLE IT".

So please put this into your diary & lets make
this Rotary birthday celebration special
- we can all take part !

Please share with all your friends .

Thanks to our many International friends we have been able
to pull this event together & I am sure it will be a success
& brings a focus to our project of Polio Fund Raising,
Which Rotarians have been enraged with.

Being Rotarians, we are bound to our promise to the children
of the world to eliminate Polio.

Yours in Rotary

Khalid Haider

Shelter box video

'Aiza Rellin is a 2nd year student at the University in Baybay
where she's working towards her BA in Agriculture.
She comes from a family in a remote village
and is working hard to do her family proud and help support them
. With a mother working in Manila and siblings that have moved away,
there's a lot of pressure on her to succeed at school.

 'She's not letting anyone down.
The 18 year old's on a full scholarship to the university
but had her school year cut short because of the typhoon.
Coming back after the typhoon hit,
her family needed her most.

'She recalled sadly that until being given a ShelterBox tent,
when it rained, her family could do nothing
'but sit in the rain and wait for it to pass.'
With the seasons getting wetter and wetter
the sheer look of relief on their faces
when given a tent was indescribable.

'Some of her family were up in Tacloban
when Haiyan hit,
and you could see the emotion welling in her story
as she recalls that they still have not been able to get in contac
with a sister that was working and living up there

Our ‘Hat-trick of Hat Days’ was a sombrero of success
on Friday October 11 as organisations and individuals around the nation
showed their support for mental health research in Australia!

There were morning teas, raffles, dinners, trivia nights, spot prizes,
bake sales and more!
We enjoyed seeing photos of people in all sorts of funny hats,
and hearing stories of how much fun people had at their events!

So far, approximately $100,000 has been raised for mental health research,
which we think is TOPS!
A reminder to those who are yet to donate their funds,
please do so via the Hat Day website.

Thank YOU for shining a light on mental illness by hosting a Hat Day event,
donning funky headgear and donating to mental health research through
100% of your donation will be used to fund vital mental health research
 aimed at finding preventions, treatments
and cures for mental illnesses.

See examples of how your donation will be used
to create a mentally healthier Australiaby reading some of our

also highlights a range of health projects we fund,
of which mental health research is our main focus.

Thank you for your participation and support for Hat Day 2013.
We hope you will be involved in Hat Day again next year –
Friday October 10, 2014.

When Julia Yank and a team of Rotary members
and health workers entered Kaduna, Nigeria,
to immunize children against polio they expected
 to encounter some tough situations.
They found one in a mother of three who stubbornly refused
to have her children vaccinated.
"She argued with us for over 15 minutes," says Yank,
a member of the Rotary Club of St. Clair County Sunset in O'Fallon, Illinois, USA.
After the team explained to her the importance
of what they were doing,
she finally agreed to allow her children to be immunized.
"We were told later that she only consented because
of the presence of the Rotarians.
That moment, I realized the impact we can make," says Yank.

---------------------

A YEAR WIthOUT TYPE 3 POLIO
The last case of type 3 wild poliovirus (WPV3)
occurred in Nigeria on 10 November 2012
. Rotary and its GPEI partners have helped reduce transmission
of WPV3 to its lowest levels ever
. "Although it is too soon to say that WPV3 has been eradicated . .
. the world has a unique opportunity to get rid of the second strain
of wild poliovirus" (after WPV2), reports the GPEI.

$500,000 EMERGENCY GRANT FOR SYRIA
Confirmation of cases in previously polio-free Syria "
serve as a stark reminder that as long as polio still exists,
unimmunized children everywhere remain at risk,"
says Rotary's International PolioPlus Committee Chair Robert S. Scott.
In response to the outbreak, Rotary and its GPEI partners,
along with local health authorities, are conducting large-scale campaigns
to immunize children in the region as quickly as possible.
Rotary is the first donor to announce funding for the GPEI's
new Middle East strategic plan, a $500,000 emergency grant for Syria.

JOINT COMMITMENT WITH BRAZIL
On 12 November Rotary, Brazil's government,
and the Pan American Health Organization signed
a Declaration of Commitment and Collaboration toward
the Goal of a Polio-Free World.
The event took place at a symposium in São Paulo where strategies
for eradicating the disease were discussed.
"The document highlights the importance of technical support
and the exchange of experiences to support countries
that are still fighting against the disease,
and the need for continued financial and political commitment
by the global community until the world is certified polio free,"
says PolioPlus Director Carol Pandak, who spoke at the event.
Rotary members in District 4420 in Brazil also announced
their commitment to donate 40 percent of their District Designated Funds
to PolioPlus. Through the End Polio Now: Make History Today
fundraising campaign and World Fund match,
these funds will be matched 2 for 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
and generate $250,000 for polio eradication.

ETHIOPIAN LEADER HONORED
 FOR POLIO-FREE ACHIEVEMENT
As president of Ethiopia, Girma Wolde-Girogis
played a pivotal role in helping his country be polio-free
during his last five years in office.
In recognition of his work, Girma received
the Rotary International Polio Eradication Champion Award in November.
Ethiopian native Ezra Teshome, governor of District 5030
in Washington, USA, presented the honor to Girma.
Teshome was in Ethiopia leading a team of North American Rotary members
to participate in the country's National Immunization Days.
Although the polio outbreak in the Horn of Africa
has affected Ethiopia, a strong response has slowed
the pace of transmission in the region.
The polio endgame strategic plan, if fully funded,
is equipped to stop such outbreaks.
"We will keep coming back until the disease is gone," says Teshome.
"We are determined to get the job done.

FAMILY HEALTH DAYS HELP 250,000 IN AFRICA

video

In 1994, Marion Bunch lost her son to AIDS.
It was early on in the U.S. AIDS epidemic
, and the stigma surrounding the disease kept her from talking
about her son’s illness with anyone but family members.
“I never thought I’d do anything about it until one day,
three years after his death, I felt a tap on the shoulder,
and a voice in my ear said, ‘Mom, get up and get going; you haven’t done anything,
and it’s been three years,’” she recalls.
Within a year, Bunch, a member of the Rotary Club of Dunwoody, Georgia, USA,
proposed an idea to her club, and through Rotary
began connecting community and professional leaders
who shared a passion for disease prevention.
This was the start of Rotarians for Family Health and AIDS Prevention (RFHA),
 a Rotarian Action Group.
In May, the group held its third annual Family Health Days in Africa.
Rotarians from 365 clubs fanned out across Uganda, Nigeria,
and South Africa to help medical professionals
and government workers provide free health services to 250,000 people.
The event included polio and measles immunizations, dental and eye clinics,
and family counseling and screening for HIV, diabetes,
hypertension, breast cancer, and cervical cancer.
“The reach of this is so phenomenal because of the presence of Rotarians
all across these countries who felt emotionally connected
by working together as one force on one project,” Bunch says.
In South Africa, 225 Rotary clubs participated at 160 sites;
in Uganda, 65 clubs supported 120 sites;
and across Lagos and Ogun states in southern Nigeria,
62 clubs supported 70 sites.
Two Rotary Foundation Global Grants provided funding
to send vocational training teams to Uganda
and to pay for bed nets that will help prevent malaria in Nigeria.
“The heartbeat of the health care system must be prevention of disease
and the promotion of health rather than [trying] to cure disease,
to fix it after,” says Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi,
 South Africa’s minister of health.
Chris Pretorius, a member of the Rotary Club of Pretoria Sunrise, South Africa
, was amazed by the turnout for the event.
“One of the members of the health department said
they had never been able to get so many children here on a day like this,” he says.
 “That in itself is success.”
The campaign illustrates how Rotary teams up with other organizations
 to expand its impact.
Since 2011, RFHA has partnered with the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation,
which contributed $450,000 for this year’s three-country event.
Other partners were South Africa’s Department of Health,
he South African Broadcasting Corporation,
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
 USAID, Delta Airlines, and Nampak.
“We are proud to have partnered with RFHA
and the Department of Health in promoting access to health screening services,”
says Therese Gearhart, president of Coca-Cola South Africa.
“At Coca-Cola, we invest in these initiatives because,
together with our partners, we have a common vision of a South Africa
that comprises healthy, strong, and thriving communities.”
Leaders of the Rotarian Action Group hope to reach
more African countries through the event each year.
“Rotary is the catalyst organization in this event because of the power
and [political] neutrality of our brand
and the respect we receive worldwide for our ability
to mobilize communities into action,” Bunch says.
“This event represents the power of public/private partnerships
. No one organization can do a massive event like this alone.
Each partner has a defined role and set of responsibilities
 and that’s why it works.”

A Thousand Years Of Experience
My hair has gone, I can hardly see
So someone said “Join Rotary”
We brushed ourselves up as best we could
Before the committee for approval we stood

We hoped they wouldn’t bring up any past deeds
At a Sunday School picnic – I once underachieved
I jay walked too & got a fine
Give me the paperwork quick – where do I sign

I heard it was an exclusive group
Maybe we will have to jump through a hoop
I shook a few hands & had an ale
Some of these members must be out on bail

Then I sat down for food & cheer
It struck me then – they’ll take anyone here
I looked around at wise old heads
A thousand years of experience

We paid our respects to country & queen
It had been a few years since that toast I’d seen
Everyone talked so they rang the bell
It was just like school – no silence fell

The talk was how they could do more
They were there to help with values core
Its because of the markets that makes it work
Its all hands on deck, no-one to shirk

It all starts early when the town is dark
There is much to do & cars to park
“I think the tent goes here, where’s the bloody map”
“I’m doing the sausages not the chicken wrap”

Ten hours later the old legs are tired
If we were getting paid, we’d all be fired
But its been a good day, we are glad we are here
Now I feel I deserve a beer

It would be nice if the group was bigger
“Don’t forget the sausage for Digger”
If a few more heads were at the meeting
I wouldn’t mind arranging the seating

Its all good fun on Wednesday nights
With hearing aids off we find have less fights
Lets all try & bring a guest
Thank Goodness for the 4 way test

Credit to the hospital staff for putting this together
and to the Rams Team for agreeing to participate.
These types of videos pop up every holiday season
, but they always mange to be uplifting.

A Russian couple was walking down the street in Moscow one night,
when the man felt a drop hit his nose.

"I think it's raining," he said to his wife.

"No, that felt more like snow to me," she replied.

"No, I'm sure it was just rain," he said.

Well, as these things go,
they were about to have a major argument about
whether it was raining or snowing.
Just then they saw a Communist Party official

 walking toward them.

"Let's not fight about it," the man said,
 "Let's ask Comrad Rudolph whether

 it's officially raining or snowing."

As the official approached, the man said
 "Tell us, Comrade Rudolph,

is it officially raining or snowing?"

"It's raining, of course,"

 he replied, and walked on.

But the woman insisted:
"I know that felt like snow!"

To which the man quietly replied,
"Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear."

The History of Rotary

---------------------------

This past year was one of exciting achievements
and forward momentum for Rotary, as highlighted in the
We launched a bold new chapter in our partnership
with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
that makes your contributions to the vital polio eradication end game
work three times as hard.
We also finished preparing for the global launch
of our new grant model, boosting our ability to help more communities
secure and sustain a better quality of life.
And we carried out our first projects with Mercy Ships,
while building on our work with Aga Khan University,
 UNESCO-IHE, the Rotary Peace Centers,
 and other partners.
In addition, The Rotary Foundation earned top marks
 from several independent charity evaluators,
including the American Institiute of Philanthropy,
Charity Navigator, and the Wise Giving Alliance.
I encourage you to review our annual report carefully,
and to share it with others who may be interested in joining

Rotary is a worldwide organisation of some 1.2 million men and women
in virtually every country in the world.
It works in truly miraculous ways sometimes.
Some events are well planned by the experienced dedicated people
working at Rotary Head Office in the USA.
Some other events just seem to happen.
These wondrous happenings spring from the fertile minds
of people driven by desire, passion
and a burning need to help those less privileged.
This is such a story.
It was “cooked up”, just a month ago by two Rotarians
on opposite sides of the globe,
Past District Governor Mukesh Malhotra in District 1140 London UK
, and District Polio Challenge ChairSusanne Rea in District 9550 Cairns Australia.
Mukesh and Susanne are asking as many people as possible to
"The World's Greatest Meal to Help Polio"
As many as one million people will be sitting down to a meal during
the week starting February 23rd 2014 with the aim is to raise $300,000
to help rid the world of the scourge of poliomyelitis.
Polio eradication has been Rotary’s major goal for some 25 years now.
The numbers of cases are down from more than 150,000 a year
, to around 250 a year.
Unfortunately, due to poor hygiene, low income levels and warring factions,
the last cases are proving hard to eliminate.
Nevertheless Rotarians are committed to a polio free world.
The dinners throughout the world may be a frugal meal
with the spend going to the cause,
they could be a weekly Rotary Club meal where donations could be made,
or they could be just a meal where people meet
and raise money or give money to End Polio Now.
Susanne Rea has taken this to Facebook
and with the help of Social Media the idea has gone mad.
In few weeks she had commitments from all 5 continents
 and over 50 Rotary Clubs.
As of writing, the Facebook page has over 2,700 members
. Have a look, the Facebook page is

Shelter Box Thank You

2013 was a momentous year for Shelterbox.
We responded to to 25 disasters in 20 countries and brought shelter
, warmth and dignity to over 13,000 families.
Here in Australia, the response from Rotary
and the public has been fantastic.
We raised over $1 million for our Typhoon Haiyan
and Syria Refugee appeals and our SRT members
were involved in deployments around the world.

At present we have SRT member, Greg Moran
 recently returned from the Philippines
and newly deployed SRT members, Peter Pearce
and SRT Anthony Keating, continuing our relief work
in the typhoon-stricken country.

ShelterBox has committed to help nearly 8,000 families
in the Philippines and none of this would be possible
 without our fantastic donors.
As our focus shifts back to the plight of the Syrian people,
I'd like to thank you all for your support
and wish you all the best for the coming year.

This month's quote comes from Dr Seuss
and I think sums up ShelterBox beautifully,
 “Sometimes the questions are complicated
 and the answers are simple."

Cheers

A FINE FAREWELL FOR LYNNE FROM SAILABILITY

Sailability came to a great close for the end of the pre Christmas period
at the South of Perth Yacht club and at the same time
spelt a fond farewell for Lynne Newton,
who has stepped down to attend to personal matters.

The weather was clear and the breeze was definitely in,
with the boats in full swing taking sailors with a disability
out on to the water in their droves.
With Lynne at the helm, organizing the sailors as they arrived
and then putting them onto the boats with their skippers
to take them out onto the river, all was doing well.
The fleet now numbers 8 boats with a Redwitch
and “Captain Pugwash” (a Court 550) capable of taking two sailors
 and their carers at once.
All the others are two person boats that scoot around the water
each Wednesday when the weather is suitable.

Many thanks to Past Commodore Gerry Drysdale
who stepped up to the barbecue plate
and cooked a fine sausage sizzle lunch
 for the volunteers on day.
He also gave a brief note of thanks to Lynne
and all the volunteers and welcomed our new co-ordinator on board.

We have found a new co-ordinator in Rear Commodore Bob Benton
who has stepped up to take over the role so well run by Lynne
. Bob recently retired and found himself
 with a loose Wednesday morning
or two and he volunteered to take up where Lynne has had to let go.
He is well known amongst the sailors
and will bring a new outlook into the role.

Sailability looks forward to more volunteers (always)
and would be delighted to welcome you aboard.
There are several roles that can be filled,
from helping load the disabled people onto boats,
to skippering a boat, to acting in support roles in the safety boats
and preparing and de-rigging the boats each day.
All of these roles are important and go together to make
sailability at South of Perth such a viable prospect.

We know it works. It’s the smiles on the sailors’ faces
as we take them out onto the water and bring them back in again.
They come back time and again.

We look forward to the start of the other half of the season
 for Sailability after Christmas.

Hey Jude

Because of an ear infection, my young son, Casey,
had to go to the pediatrician.
I was impressed with the way the doctor directed
his comments and questions to my son.
When he asked Casey, “Is there anything you are allergic to?”
Casey nodded and whispered in his ear.
Smiling, the pediatrician wrote out a prescription
 and handed it to me.
Without looking at it, I tucked it into my purse.
Later, the pharmacist filled the order,
remarking on the unusual food-drug interaction my son must have.
When he saw my puzzled expression,
he showed me the label on the bottle
. As per the doctor’s instructions, it read:
 “Do not take with broccoli.”

It’s now easier than ever to strengthen Rotary’s image in your community
with the materials and resources available in the Rotary Brand Center.
Launched earlier this month, the Brand Center offers a simple
and intuitive way to customize your club logo, create a marketing brochure,
or give your newsletter a fresh look.
You’ll also find guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions
as well as information about why telling our story is important.
“The Brand Center enables everybody to play an active role
in promoting Rotary to the world,” says Alan Buddendeck,
general manager and chief communication officer for Rotary International.
“What’s exciting is that the site has been designed
in cooperation with Rotary members worldwide,
which is critically important to the user experience,” Buddendeck says
Here are five reasons you should use the Brand Center:

1.       You can create your own club and district logos
 featuring Rotary’s masterbrand signature
and see your edits in real time.

2.      You can develop professional-looking PowerPoint presentations,
press releases, and newsletters that
 incorporate Rotary’s visual identity.
Templates can be customized as much -
- or as little -- as you want.

3.      You can find guidelines for using Rotary’s logos and answers
to frequently asked questions about our new visual identity.
For instance, did you know that your member pin remains unchanged?
Or that free fonts are available along
 with the commercially licensed options?

4.      You can upload and store the materials and logos
you create for future use by creating a basket
. Use the Quick Share function to email your basket
and share your new materials with members.

5.       You can download broadcast-quality public service announcements,
videos, and images to help tell Rotary’s story.
Choose from a variety of topics to illustrate including
Join Leaders, Exchange Ideas, and Take Action
-- our three organizing principles.

President Barack Obama signed an omnibus appropriations bill
in January that provides $205 million to support polio eradication in 2014,
through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
and U. S. Agency for International Development.
The largest government donor to polio eradication,
the U.S. has contributed more than $2.3 billion since the mid-1980s,
when 125 countries were polio endemic
and the disease afflicted 350,000 people annually.
Today, only Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria are endemic,
and in 2013, the combined incidence of polio in those countries
 fell to a record-low 157 cases.
Last month , India reached a three-year milestone without polio,
paving the way for the entire Southeast Asia region
to be certified free of the disease.

A bird breeder, who dealt with only species that are normally wild,
not parrots, canaries, or parakeets,
had a difficult life, getting up early to feed all his charges,
never taking a vacation, working hard,
and yet he enjoyed his life.
When the local newspaper interviewed him for a feature story,
they asked him if he was sorry about the life
 he'd chosen for himself.
His reply? "I have no egrets."

Tom Hanks

I took my nephew out for his first beer yesterday.
Got him a Budweiser.....he didn't like it -- so I had it.
Then I got him a pint of draft, he didn't like that, either, so I had it.
Then I ordered him a Kokanee, and again he didn't like it so I drank it.

I ended up buying him a Blue, a Canadian, a Moosehead,

a Pilsner, Molson Ice and a Coors, but he didn't like any of them
and I had to drink them.
Well, by the time we got to the rum and the tequila,
I could hardly push his stroller home!!!!

Rotary Leads Australia in Mental Health Prevention
Mental disorders have become the main source of disability burden in Australia.
In response, funding from the Australian Government
has supported an increase in treatment services.
However, as the percentage of people seeking treatment has risen from 37% to 46%,
the prevalence of mental disorders in Australia appears to be unchanged.
So the question remains: how do we reduce
the impact of mental health on the Australian community?
Australian Rotary Health (ARH) has become one of the first research organisations
to commit funding into finding preventions for mental disorders.
At an ARH Symposium held last year, which brought together 25
of Australia’s top experts in Mental Health prevention,
evidence showed that prevention is particularly promising
for common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety.
In conjunction with Rotary Clubs, they will also run health forums
around Australia bringing information to the community
of how they can prevent the development mental disorders in their own lives.
Finally, a third program to put them ahead of the pack
is the launch of an electronic newsletter spotlighting the latest research findings
of mental health prevention across the lifespan.
Five new research projects will be funded this year
in the area of mental health prevention:

·         A Multi-tiered approach to suicide prevention in young Australians
- Tonelle Handley, National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, NSW.

·         The prevention of mental health difficulties in adolescents
 using an emotion-focussed parenting program
S Sophieighurst, University of Melbourne, Vic
.
·         Effective suicide prevention campaign material for young people:
 A randomised controlled trial -
Jane Pirkis, University of Melbourne, Vic
.
·         Phase II study of an online population-based intervention
to improve the mental health of young people who are unemployed
- Vanessa Rose, University of New South Wales,

·         Helping young Australians to "Look for Good":
A school-based trial of positive attention training to increase
children's emotional well-being and prevent anxiety and depression
- Allison Waters, Griffith University, Vic.

For more information about these programs,
or to sign up to receive the prevention email newsletter,
please contact Australian Rotary Health on (02) 8837 1900

Ski lift fail

A local drug rehab center had fallen into disrepair
and the grounds were in shambles.
The newly hired director assumed the task of upgrading the facility.
The improvements became the pride of the downtown section
of the city with newly planted bushes and a lush, thick lawn,
and accent art scattered everywhere.

The director of the center was known for his humorous approach
to even the most traumatic of circumstance
. Considering the service he was providing to the community,
his constant, upbeat personality was the envy
of all who came to know him.

He was also into landscaping with a passion
and the new lawn and bushes and new,
young trees were a source of great pride for him.

And so it was not a surprise when he chose a motto
for the drug rehabilitation center that matched
his desires for the preservation of the center's good appearance
 Keep Off The Grass.

Make Your Day Better In 64 Seconds

No dictionary has ever been able to define
the difference between “complete” and “finished”.
However, in a linguistic conference, held in London, England,
and attended by some of the best linguistics in the world,
 Samsundar Balgobin,
a Guyanese was the clever winner.

His final challenge was this:
Some say there is no difference between “complete” and “finished”.
Please explain the difference in a way that is easy to understand.
His response was:
When you marry the right woman,
you are “complete”.
If you marry the wrong woman
 you are “finished”.
And, when the right one catches you
with the wrong one, you are “completely finished”.
His answer received a five minute standing ovation

There are reports of a new problem here in Australia.
Some of the Kangaroos have developed a thirst for revenge
against the traffic that keeps knocking them down.
Drivers have reported that they'll pass a mobs of roo's
that are hopping along peacefully,
but as soon as they've passed them
, the roo's suddenly change direction and veer towards the vehicle.
The driver then has to drive as quickly as possible
 to escape the rampaging marsupials
. Drivers are being urged to keep an eye on their
veer-roo mirror at all times

Norton Commando Transformer by Steve Twist

A duck was walking along a stream in Australia
when he happened upon a platypus standing on the bank.
The platypus was t holding a sign that read:
"Homeless. Out of work. Please help."

The duck offered to help the platypus
but not through a simple grant by donation.
He said he would help the platypus find employment.
But in the interim he would also loan him the money
necessary to get on with his life.
They shook hands to seal the deal
and each went their separate ways.

Speaking in his simple language,
he told his wife that evening of what he had done.
"Duck help out platypus today," he said.
 "Duck feel good.
Economy get better. Everyone happy."

His wife looked at him somewhat askance
as she continued to prepare food for the evening's meal.

"What's the matter?" The duck asked

She turned to face him.
"And what do you plan to do when
the platypus fails to pay you back?"

"It pretty simple," he replied.
 "Duck bill platypus."

A teenage boy is getting ready to take his girlfriend to the prom.
Firtst he goes to rent a tux
, but there's a long tux line at the shop and it takes forever.
Next he has to get some flowers,
so he heads over to the florist and there's a huge line there.
He waits forever but eventually gets the flowers
. Then he heads out to rent a limo.
Unfortunately, there's a large line at the rental office,
but he's patient and gets the job done.
Finally, the day of the prom comes.
 There two are dancing happily
and his girlfriend is having a great time
. When the song is over, she asks him to get her some punch,
so he heads over to the punch table
and there's no punchline

The program is a values based training model targeting indigenous

 Spot the odd one out!!

Lets go for a ride!!

An American astronaut has an emergency during his re-entry
into earth's atmosphere and his space craft
 crash-lands in the Australian bush,
way out in the middle of nowhere.
After what seems like an eternity,
he wakes up in a bush clinic, very rustic, dirty,
with foul smells and he is bandaged from head to foot.
He sees a very large, somewhat gruff looking nurse
approaching him as he lies in his cot.
"Did I come here to die?" he says
with a deep sense of resignation and fear.
 "No," the Aussie nurse replies,
 "You came here yesterday."

Very Clever Ad

A planeload of Pepsi flying over Africa had a malfunction and went down.
A few weeks later, the Pepsi Company sent a rescue plane.
They searched the area and found a tribe of cannibals.
They walked up to the Chief of the tribe
and asked him if he knew anything about the crash.
The Chief said, "You betcha!"

When asked where the crew was, the Chief replied,
"We ate the crew, and we drank the Pepsi."
The Rescue crew were shocked.
One man asked, "Did you eat their legs?"
     The chief replied,
"We ate their legs, and we drank the Pepsi."
     Another rescuer asked,
 "Did you eat their arms?"
     The Chief replied,
"We ate their arms, and we drank the Pepsi."
After looking totally perplexed for a minute, a third asked,
"Did you... you know... eat, their... their 'things?'"
     The Chief says, "No."
     "No?" asked the rescuer.
     "No," replied the Chief.
"THINGS go better with Coke."

Deserving Waitress

Once upon a time in a land far, far away there was a King
. In the King's court was a Jester.

The Jester had a real talent for puns and shared them
with the King at every opportunity.

The King, however, hated puns more than anything.
In fact, puns so annoyed the King that he issued
a proclamation banning puns from his kingdom.
Anyone caught creating or distributing puns
 was to be hung immediately.

When the Jester heard his King's proclamation,
 he immediately re-quested an audience.
 Appearing before the King,
he begged to have the new rule revoked.

The King refused.

The following dialog ensued:

King: “Why can't you tell normal jokes like other Jesters?”

Jester: “OK, I'll try.
 Name a subject.”

King: “How about the King?”

Jester: “But the King is not a subject.”

This blatant pun angered the King greatly.
He demanded that the Jester try again,
 and this time be serious.

The Jester agreed, and thought long and hard before speaking.

“You know,” he said, “our Queen may be a wonder,
but Queen Mary was a Tu-dor.”

This was too much for the King and he ordered that the Jester be hung.

However, when he saw his old Jester up on the gallows
he was filled with sympathy.

“Listen,” said the King, “I'll give you one last chance.
If you can go for one more week without telling me any puns,
I'll let you live.”

The Jester agreed and was escorted down from the gallows.

When he reached the ground,
he looked back up at the swinging rope and said to the King,
“You know it’s true what they say.”

"What's that?” asked the King.

“No noose is good noose.”

The Jester was promptly hung

A witch doctor kept the members of his tribe in subjugation
by means of his powerful magic
. Whenever one of the tribe’s people tried to revolt against the tyrant,
 he uttered a magic incantation
and turned the person into an apple.

One night, a group of the witch doctor’s subjects sneaked into his hut,
opened his book of magic and learned the apple incantation.
 When the doctor awoke
, the people recited the magic phrases
and turned him into an apple.

But the magic book warned that if the apple ever dried out
and changed significantly in weight,
it would change back to the person under the spell.
Not wishing for the doctor’s revenge,
every day the tribe’s people would place the apple
on a scale to make sure its weight remained the same.

Moral: A weigh a day keeps the doctor an apple

The first issue was published in January 1911
 as The National Rotarian.
The named changed in September 1912 after clubs
were chartered in Canada and England.

 born 146 years ago

In Tamil Nadu, India, two doctors, both members of the Rotary Club of Srirangam,
discovered an alarming trend in the remote city outskirts of Trichy,
 women dying of breast cancer.
Drs. K. Govindaraj and K.N. Srinivasan knew that much of the
death and suffering could be avoided,
and both were motivated by their personal experiences with the disease.
Govindaraj watched his mother die of breast cancer a decade earlier,
and helped found the Dr. K. Shantha Breast Cancer Foundation in her memory.
Srinivasan, an oncologist, witnessed unprecedented growth
in the number of younger patients coming to his clinic
with advanced stages of the disease.
According to the National Cancer Registry of India,
20 to 40 women per 100,000 are suffering from breast cancer.
And because many women lack the resources to travel to the city,
or the$50 fee for proper screening , the doctors needed a unique approach.
During a trip to South Korea, Govindaraj saw a large van outfitted
with X-ray equipment parked outside a mall,
and thought a moving doctor’s office and lab -- or “mammobus”
-- could overcome the challenges they faced.

Through a Rotary global grant, the men were able to buy
and outfit their own bus. Since April 2012 t
he Shantha Foundation’s mammobus,
supported by local Rotarians
and the Rotary Club of Rockville, Maryland, USA,
has administered 2,500 free breast cancer screenings.
Early stage cancer has been detected and treated in six women,
and thousands have been taught how to conduct regular self-exams,
an important means of early detection.

Nico Calabria, born with one leg, has defied expectations

An elderly man had a massive stroke
and the family drove him to the emergency room.
After a while the ER doctor appeared wearing a long face.
  “I’m afraid Grandpa is brain-dead,
but his heart is still beating.”

“Oh, Dear God,” cried his wife,
“We’ve never had a liberal Party Member in the family before!”
