Jack Wilson
Rotary club of Quairading
QUAIRADING resident John 'Jack' Wilson turned 100 in January
and marked the occasion with more than 120 guests
at the Quairading Club last weekend.
During the celebrations he was honoured with traditional head dress
and certificate by the Sikh Community of WA
for spreading ashes of a Sikh family member 73 years ago.
The crown was also presented by a local Quairading community member
as respect for Jack's Scottish family heritage.
Jack last year received a Citizen of the Year Award from the local shire
for his selfless service to the community over many years.
He held the role of secretary for the Farmer's Union for 25 years,
has been a member of the Quairading Hospital Board,
a member of the Quairading Rotary Club for more than 50 years,
served on the Shire of Quairading between 1969 and 1978
and has been the secretary for the Uniting Church of Quairading.
He spent many hours delivering firewood around the town
to raise money for the community.
Jack began delivering to CBH when the co-operative
was first formed 83 years ago and wrote the following of his life in Quairading:
"Dad came out from Scotland about 1906/1907,
when they were still building the number two Rabbit Proof Fence,
and started up a farm in what is now Quairading.
The family still farms the same block of land today.
I was born in 1916.
My mother was a school teacher, so I spent a lot of my early childhood
in the classroom with her while she taught the local kids.
When I left school, I was going to study engineering,
as I've always been mechanically inclined.
But then we had the Great Depression and Dad said to me
that he wasn't going to pay for me to go idling at university,
so I ended up working at the family farm.
We managed to get through the Depression alright
and then World War II broke out and I spent four years in the armed forces.
I never ended up serving overseas but was stationed
with the 1st Armoured Division to keep the wheels turning back at home
and to protect Australia from any potential invasions".

A Learned Experience
We arrived in Jakarta on the 12 January 2016,
and as per usual we stayed the first night at FM 7 Hotel
which is situated close to the airport.
We had a meeting with the Rotaract Club of Jakarta Metropolitan
that evening to discuss the next stage of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyum school project.
This was a long meeting as the school now had a new vice-principal
who neither supported the project, nor welcomed our input.
At this point we had completed approximately 80%
of the intended works around the school,
which did make us happy because we were working for the benefit of the students.
After a long discussion (in Indonesian) with the Vice-Principal
and Roni, President of the Rotaract Club of Jakarta Metropolitan,
we decided to abandon the project due to the negative comments
about Rotary expressed by the Vice-Principal.
Unfortunately this man was convinced that we had ulterior motives
and wanted to completely take over the school.
Roni, who had been acting as interpreter, was so upset
and embarrassed that he apologised for the next few days.
After gathering our thoughts we decided to investigate another school
which was located less than ten minutes away from our original project.
This school, known as Bantu Kami, was due to be demolished;
however, we recognised the potential and benefits of renovating the school
and thus delaying any thoughts of demolition as this school
would become fully utilised again well into the future.
We researched the details and had an in-depth discussion
with the school principal;
following this we finally got approval to proceed
with renovating the school.
We started the quoting process, which took two weeks
to come to a pricing agreement.
In the meantime we had many meetings with the Rotaractors
and we agreed the project should go ahead as can be seen by the photos.
To our great satisfaction, we made considerable progress.
The roof is near complete (15/02/2016),
and then the gyprock work will start.
We still need to finance the electrical work, painting and furniture repairs,
and so we will be fundraising over the next year
for this stage of the project.
Our major obstacle during our time was the botched bombing
event in the Sarina Mall where three innocent people were tragically killed.
Despite this shocking event, the people of Jakarta
went about their business as per usual.
On Saturday 16 January we were invited to the training seminar
for Rotary District 3410.
This was a very fruitful and productive day.
I gave a power point presentation about our project,
covering all stages of the project from commencement until now.
Callan spoke about the projects that Rockingham/Kwinana Rotaract Club
were undertaking.
Stephen spoke in general about the interaction
between Rotary and Rotaract.
During our time in Indonesia
we visited a number of Rotary Clubs to promote our project
and enhance goodwill between Indonesia and Australia.

for their contribution to our worthwhile project.
